Ten years after it was condemned, the old Palace Hotel came tumbling down last week as part of an effort first spearheaded by the Magna Community Council back in 1974. The original intent was to remove those structures that had fallen into such disrepair that they could not be rehabilitated. The first building to fall victim to the demolition squad in the fall of 74 was the old Central Lumber and Hardware store that once stood just east of the Gem Theatre. For the next decade nothing was done in the downtown area due to bureaucratic red tape, but earlier this year, Salt Lake County decided to support the effort by tearing down the historic Magna Sheriffs office and fire hall. Since then then the county attorneys office has issued orders for uroys. Farah Levis. Orig. 18.00 to 32.00 i y B-JCC' NEW YEARS EVE PARTY Denim and Corduroy Styles. Famous Brands. We were getting good shots, but they just didn't go in. The Priates will be hoping to rediscover their shooting eye tomorrow night (Friday) when they face Provo at 7:30 at Kennedy jr. high, the demolition of eight other buildings, all on 2700 South. According to Bonnie Esplin, deputy county attorney, one of the problems in issuing orders for demolition was that some of the buildings were built before address certificates were issued. In addition, many had absentee owners, and some buildings had multiple owners which had to be notified of the condemnation order. Included in those that will be taken down are the White Lily Bakery and the old Pleasant Green Grocery, which later became Georgias Place. Work has already begun to dismantle these structures. Others that will fall to the wreckers ball are the Swenson Building at 9087 West; the Panama Hotel and the Fair Store at 9039 West; the Teen Cove at 9031 West; the National Finance Building at 9013 West; and the old First Security Bank building directly across the street from the State Liquor Store. The Palace Hotel was one of three hotels built shortly after the turn of the century to house single men who had come to the area to work in the mills. Later it became a family hotel where people stayed until they could find a house. At one time it housed the Happy Hour Theatre and during the 1930s and early 40s, gambling and prostitution flourished there. One of the first orders of business for visitors to the South Pole Station is a trek to the Pole. And the first'-stoIs usually a red and white barber pole topped by a silver-colore- d globe and surrounded by the flags of the Antarctic Treaty na- -' tions. The real South Pole is marked by a simple bamboo stake driven into the Ice 555 feet away. Why arent they in the same place? A slight Incline on the underlying plateau moves the ice at the Pole 31 feet a year. So the bamboo stake Is moved, It always stays planted on the geographic South Pole, while the barber pole and its flags, although never touched, keep moving. |
