They had very little money back in 1934 and tossed their belongings in the back seat of their broken down Model A Ford and headed west. All along the way, Elva recalls, the sunflowers were in bloom, seemingly welcoming them along their way. This all took place in the midst of the Great Depression but the newlyweds kept going west while singing the old song, We'll build a sweet little nest, somewhere in the West, and let the rest of the world go by. The Starks, however, didnt let the rest of the world go by, for Arvil, with a new Ph.D. in his pocket, had accepted a teaching post at the old Agricultural College (now the USU) in Logan and was given the magnificent salary of $125 a month. The two of them didn't know a soul in Utah and Elva soon became the only professionally trained librarian there for two hours a day. She was paid 35 cents an hour and was pleased to get it. They learned to love Utah and found they could manage environmental improvement, gardening and garden club projects and are now actively involved in garden therapy for senior citizens. The entire fmaily worked together in building their home and have furnished it with antiques they have found and restored. Arvil is a retired USU Extension Horticulturist and Elva is a reference librarian at the University of Utah. Many state and national awards and wide recognition have come their way because of their work in various fields. In 1975 Elva was named Utah Mother of the Year.
