Show 4 WEST VALLEY VIEW o Thursday, Aug. 11, 1983 Open State Tournament To - Cottonwood Pitching Comes Through MURRAY. Cottonwood stayed - pitching - in the first two rounds of the State American Legion tournament and came away with two businesslike victories. The stingiest team in an explosive Valley League, Cottonwood received a from Carl Coates and a three-hitte- r from Jim Delis to advance through the first two days of win over Viewmont play with a and a 0 decision over Bountiful. Delis shackled Viewmont, a team with definite championship aspirations, keeping the ball low and on the corners. Coates, on the other hand, was overpowering in his shutout win over Bountiful. While Cottonwoods hitting didnt bring down the roof, Coach Bob Burketts club hit in the clutch (particularly Jim Pike), ran the bases well and made its opponents errors hurt. with its strength one-hitt- 1 4-- Cottonwood 5, Viewmont ed up his pitches well against View- he can be tough. He was Monday in hurling a to open the tournament. His no-h-it bid lasted until one out in the sixth when Bountifuls starting pitcher, Eric Johnson, drove a pitch to right center for a double. Other than that one pitch, Coates was in control all the way. He threw mont, getting himself into trouble periodically before bearing down and getting himself back out again. He forced Viewmont to strand two runners in the first, one each in the second and third, and two more in the fourth, coaxing hitters each time into grounding out to the right side of the infield. Three of the grounders went to second baseman Chris Hunsaker, who did what Viewmonts infield didnt -he stayed down on the ball. Viewmonts fielders appeared tentative on the infield dirt, which had been soaked by the previous nights downpour, and their lack of aggressiveness resulted in five errors. one-hitt- er r rn Plus Auto & Truck Glass New, 2nds and Used After Two Games perience educationally as well as athletically for the participants. However, Logan came right back with three more in the bottom of the inning and in the fourth, Logan answered three Granger runs with four of its own, with Woodard taking over on the mound. Woodard delivered a three-rushot over the fence after Mitch Larsen and Platt had base hits, but Logan led In the fifth, Joy brought Granger back within three with a solo homer. That set up the three- - run rally that sent the game to an extra frame. Two hit batsmen, a walk and a single by Joy produced the runs. On Tuesday, Granger was faced with the grim prospect of dealing with Easts ace Bobby Edwards. Once again Granger out-hthe opposition, this time 3 and played errorless ball, but the 1 verdict was earned by Edwards, who scattered the seven hits and was able to pull the trigger for the key out when he needed it. Grangers lone run was an unearned one in the top of the seventh. East took advantage of a double, three walks and a sacrifice fly off Joy to give Edwards all the runs he would need in the third at Ken Price field. Three insurance runs crossed the plate in the sixth on a Wally Edwards shot over the fence. It was a disappointing end for a veteran Granger squad that was talented defensively and had one of the Valley Leagues finest offensive attacks. n 10-6- .-' t it 5-- VINE I Vine STREET 4949 So.
