Show WEST V ALLEY VIEW r SAYS SHE I think it was Charles Schultz Which is why Pimm and Arnold find themselves on the hot seat right now. Jazz fans haven't tasted enough victory to whet too many appetites. But theyre getting restless. in his Peanuts comic strip who added, losing isnt anything. His Charlie Brown friends never even come close to winning a baseball game Theyve become symbolic of the loveable losers & ft doesnt produce a winner. Especially when a team has been accustomed to winning. and of the world. But in real life, losers arent very often loveable. Ask Frank Arnold. Or Jerry Pimm. Frank Layden knows it, too. In athletics, fans and management aren't patient too long with 1982 THE GREEN SHEET WEST by Michele Bartmess a coach who Winning isn't everything, some great moralist once Thursday, Dec. 23, Hopefully for those two college coaches the cooler heads of the athletic directors will prevail as they did in Logan and Ogden last year. Moral victories can carry a program only so far. Just about as far as past glories do. Although past glories and narrow losses to recognized powerhouses might bring some brief respite, when the accounting is completed there had better be a whole lot more digits in the W column that under the L listing. Coaching is a profession that only the foolhardy would pursue. unload the coach and its beginning to pay off. Take the case of LaVell Edwards at BYU. While at Granite high, Edwards certainly didnt run up very impressive stats. Hes the first to admit that. But he has enjoyed immense success on the college level. It doesnt take long to discover that all of the great lessons of life that a coach imparts will go for naught if he doesnt win more often than not. Of course, along with winning, hed better be imparting those values to the young men under his tutelage. The same will undoubtedly eventually apply to female programs. Despite that, a few losing seasons and hed find himself in dread of being invited to Glen Tucketts office. Unfortunately, many young coaches do not get an ope their portunity to skills in the physical and mental aspects of the game. fine-tun- Three losses in a row has everyone questioning Bear Bryants right to continue at One coach who suffered through some tough seasons at an area high school told me that he had a lot to learn those first few years. Couple that with the fact that he wasnt dealing with a great deal of talent and you have a problem. However, a principal who could see the mans potential resisted urgings from without to Alabama. And the Bear has won more games than any coach ever did. Now, suddenly, he is senile, too old, etc. My blood is so blue that I wear that color inside and out on game days. I wasnt thrilled with the mark posted by the Cougar basketball team, but for heavens sake I dont want Frank Arnolds head. I met the man once and there is more there than any of the fans will ever give him credit for. He may get caught up in the emotion of the moment and he may have said some things in interviews, but until youve walked in his Adidas, dont judge. And the same applies to Pimm. One situation that may have been blown entirely out of proportion and years of respect have been tarnished. Thats rubbish. Unfortunately the term fan comes from fanatic, which Webster defines as overly zealous; a person whose extreme zeal, piety, etc. goes beyond what BYU fans are is reasonable. often guilty of extreme piety. fair-weath- er Unfortunately, too many of us who consider ourselves fans fall into that category. 0-- 5 The games people pay to see played cannot survive without spectators. The difference in Utah is that the four major col-leges have a following of fans of the of them some albeit variety - while the Jazz, for the most part, draws specfair-weath- -- tators. But maybe thats all they have earned. There is much to be said for infans, but when they cross the visible line and become fanatics, problems frequently surface. The true fan will agonize over a loss. He may even be depressed, but it wont be the end of the world. The sun will still come up tomorrow. Yelling at the wife and kids, hanging the coach in effigy, kicking the dog, will not change the outcome, Once, after a particularly tough Arnold loss, the much-maligne- d said, Well, nobody died.
