Show 3B 1792 to 1982- - Dee Hamm, anikl, There arent many ideas, crafts or inventions which originated back in 1792 that can be found unchanged today. changed, today. In fact, Demont Dee B. Hansen, Mur-rayitonly recently took high awards in competition with the e, technique that Alois thought of back there. The art form takes its name from the Latin word Litho, meaning stone, and is know today as Litho theres one, a craft perfected by But very Alois Senefelder in Germany, which has been used throughout the years since that long ago date, and is in use, practically un graphy and the finished piece a Lithograph. It also just happens to be the technique behind todays huge, web presses which have revolution-izeswift d the printing business. Rembrandt used the method, and, as well as thousands of others, so did Picasso. And, instead of mechanical Thursday, Dec. 16, 1982 t Gw Sheet'd Ummuam moh means taking the place of the handwork, it is done basically the same way Alois did. You begin with a special absorbent stone that comes exclusively from Lithuania. It is very porous and absorbs quickly the grease from the crayons which the artist draws with. Different intensities in the finished product are achieved by the intensity of the crayon upon the stone. Once the artist completes his drawing he then etches the stone with an acid which is set with gum arabic. This process takes a day or two to complete. When you reach this point finally, you make your copies of what you have long been working on. Its a time process consuming and the ink is applied to the stone, being where the stone is bare and absorbed in the image area. One print at a time is repelled how WEST VALLEY VIEW its done. You apply the inked stone to a piece of art paper, run it through a press and then carefully peel the paper off the stone. The imprint you will find is the exact mirror image of the etching. It is only here that the artist knows whether his work is a masterpiece or just another practice in the long education of his work. The process then begins again, with the stone being and applied to another piece of paper. d Each piece is numbered and the art aficionado can tell immediately where his purchase occurred in the artists run. The artist, you see, first determines how many copies to print and then on each piece will appear a code such as No. 130, No. 230, No. 330 and so on. In other words if your etching says No. 2930, you will know that the artist made 30 copies and yours is the 29th one made. When this is done and the artist has made all the copies he wishes to make, he will then grind the etching off the stone and have a new surface ready to begin again. It is not an overnight craft, either, to learn or to do. Dee got started in art schools as a young man and has never left the field. However, the task of earning a living for his wife (Virginia Smith) and family soon took priority, but the parents of five children. Dennis was a athlete at Murray high and is now producing movies in Los Angeles; Eric Rick is in Saudia Arabia as an engineer with Aramco, an oil company and DeAnn went back to college even his livelihood bordered on his art interest. It was in 1945 that well-know- Dee founded the Hansen Graphic Equipment and Supply Co. and served Utah and the surrounding states for 30 years when, in 1975, he com- , , n after her children bined with another graphic company the Graphic Systems, Inc. This move gave Dee time to follow his lifelong love of art and he is now devoting much of his time to Lithography and oil painting in his Murray stu- were in school and is now in the UofU graduate school of architecture. Reenie, also married, is the owner of a gift shop in Thousand Oaks, Calif, and Sean who was born when his older brothers and sisters were in college, is a student at the UofU with his sights set on a degree in electrical engineering. For the first time in 15 years the entire family, with spouses and children will all be dio. One of his lithographs Sheep Herd was accepted in the 1975 Springville National show and the same lithograph won first place in the professional division at the Salt Palace in 1976. Lonesome took first in Murray for Christmastime. Cowboy Demont is an avid place this past summer in the Salt lake County Art Show in Murray. He exhibits all over the country, even being accepted in the Washington National Gallery, Virginia Institute of Fine Arts, Beaux Arts and on and on and on. All attesting to his mastery of his crafts in oils, water color and lithography. He and Virginia are traveler and paints as he goes. Last summer as he sketched while at the Baja Peninsula of Mexico, children gathered around to see what he was doing and he took lessons from them in the Spanish language, and the first thing he did when coming home was to enroll in a Spanish class at the hill top university. An active man, whether traveling, skiing, bicycling or jogging, his knapsack will be found on his back. It doesnt contain food or clothing either, but in it are the tools of his trade, materials for sketching. Then once he returns to his studio he will have fresh ideas to etch on stone, put in oil or use in the delicate art of water "With a knapsack on his back" Dee sets out on his bike. The knapsack contains the pencils and paper for sketching which can then be transferred to the Lithograph stone, oils or water colors. A- Rooms - 3RD OR ADDITIONAL colors.
