CARBURETOR WINTERIZE NOW Alignment has been named Granite districts teacher of the year. Norman R. Wendel, currently teaching at Taylorsville high and formerly music department chairman at Granger high for 17 years, was presented a bronze plaque by the Granite Board of Education Tuesday night and will represent the district in state competition. Wendel, father of seven children, was quick to credit his wife Kathy for much of his success. In summarizing his philosophy of music education, the Granger native wrote in his portfolio, Every teacher has the responsibility to teach more than his subject. In vocal music, I have had opportunities, with many different texts and styles, to teach English, math, history, art; social studies, patriotism, service, love, commitment, personal health and grooming. What value is there in teaching a subject or skill if we havent taught how to be a good person and citizen in our society? Mr. Wendel said he believes there is no such thing as a monotone. As a result of this belief, he has worked with many young people other choral directors may not have considered for their choirs. He says that seeing such young people learn to sing and become assets to his choirs has brought him some of his most cherished memories. Wendel has been a member of 23rd Army the Band since 1957, serving for Z'2 years as commanding officer and bandmaster. He is also a member WEST VALLEY. Opening the travel film lecture series at Utah Technical College next month will be a film on Lebanon as it once was. The film, one of six to be presented in the 11th season of the popular series, will be titled Lebanon and shown Nov. 2. China Chevy Malibus. Going with a split of six Malibus and three Fairmonts saved enough money to allow an additional Fairmont to be added to the overall deal without exceeding the budget, the council argued. Although he earlier criticized the Fairmonts, Campbell agreed to the compromise and wound up with 10 cars instead of nine for a cost of $87,190. The council voted 0 for the purchase (Larry Bunkall and Claude Jones were absent). Campbell had spoken disparagingly about the performance of the Fairmont as a patrol vehicle, contending it had less power than the Malibu and was more prone to break down, thus adding expensive maintenance costs to the price tag. The Fairmont is equipped with 308cc engine. only a r, The Malibus 350cc engine will provide additional power needed by officers in chases which routinely occur once or twice a day, Campbell told the council. The Fairmont is smaller and would be uncomfortable for taller officers, he noted. Maintenance problems also would require the department to stock spare parts for Fords as well as Chevrolets; 5-- Today is scheduled for Nov. 30. Others will be on England, South America, - the South Seas and Spain. Season tickets are $10 per person. Purchased at the door, the price is $2 per person. Said Maloney: 350s are going the way of the dinosaur. If there are no 350s, we want to have experience with the engine. Councilman Mike Embley also noted that Fairmonts get four more miles per gallon (13 mpg) than Malibus. And Councilman Brent Anderson added that the department could buy one more car with the $2,000 savings per vehicle. Campbell balked at a suggestion that only Fairmonts be purchased. What good would that do us. Wed have unhappy officers and nine -- below the amount budgeted for the purchase, he pointed out. But council members, noting among other things the disparity in price between the Seiner bid and the lowest bid - $7,992 per vehicle from Henry S. Day Ford - persuaded the chief to accept a mixed package of Ford Fairmonts and CDdED had acknowledged that automobile producers were discontinuing 350cc engines and would produce only the smaller engines in years to Fairmonts. He said the engine might be fine for "detectives but more durable cars with larger engines were needed for patrol. When talk of a mixture first surfaced, Campbell suggested no more than seven Malibus and two Fairmonts. Embley countered er with a split. If they go junk on us, we can move them into the detective division. They need them there, too," Campbell said, his opposition to the six-thr- Fairmonts appearing to waver. City Manager John Newman then observed that the savings from the split would allow the purchase of another Fairmont. Which prompted Councilman Pete Winder, reflecting on Campbells point, to note: Only, if the Fairmonts go to junk, weve got more junk. Campbell said officers assigned to drive the Fairmonts likely would be upset and that hed have to explain the reason behind their pur- the city already has about $5,000 in spare Chevy parts, the chief said. Mayor Jerry Maloney pointed out, however, that police officials On West Side chase. The officers should understand why the council is doing it, returned Maloney, citing the need to prepare for the demise of the 350cc engine. .
