Hundreds of hours preparation - most of it by volunteers - will come to fruition tonight (Thursday) when the Broadway musical Lil Abner opens on an outdoor stage in Murray park. While some members of the production staff are paid a small salary generated through ticket sales and a grant from the Utah Arts Council, performers, musicians and volunteers from the Murray Arts Council have put in countless hours of unpaid labor, albeit a labor of love. The only pay most of these people get is applause, commented Mayor LaRell D. Muir, who was the prime mover in the organization of the Arts Council, which began producing musicals in Murray park three years ago. I cant tell you how much excitement is generated in our community by the excellence of what has been offered and is certain to be offered again this week. This is an outstanding cast; a really neat show, Muir said after observing several, rehearsals, during the week. I understand they come from all over the valley from Murray others from Sandy, Bennion, Taylorsville, West Valley, Salt Lake, and the leads both reside in Holladay. Im impressed. Muir said he was pleasantly surprised at the story line. Its based on a cartoon, but theres tremendous depth of character and a good story. The musics excellent. Dear Editor: In considering the present problem of West Valley City and its proposed beer tax, it might be well to see where the real responsibility lies. It seems to me that, as in many of our present day problems, responsibilities have been misplaced to the extent that the uninvolved and the innocent bystander are required to pay for someone elses folly, perhaps felonious EDITOR When a person gets drunk, he apparently does it himself. I dont remember a single case where the defendant charged with being under the influence of liquor in the committing of any misdemeanor or felony tried to pass the respon- sibility of forcibly pouring booze down his, the defendants throat. If I eat some lousy hot dogs and get an upset stomach, I have to buy my own and even serve myself my own ROLAIDS. If I hit my own thumb with my own hammer, DISTRICT 12 SOCCER REGISTRATION BOYS & GIRLS AGES 4 THRU 17 AUGUST 7TH KEARNS LIBRARY 10 AM TO 2 PM Cost $22 ' Birth Certificate & Guardian Signature Required 166 everybody laughs and makes me put on my own band-aid- . But if a bunch of people deliberately get drunk and in that state of inebriation kill several thousands of people and maim many hunderds of thousands of other people, rob, rape, molest, murder and vandalize to an extent unknown, what happens? Defense attorneys cry crocodile tears and say he couldnt control himself - he was drunk. Didnt he pour his own booze? The judge takes a thousand dollars for the states coffers to pay for the widows and orphans tears and poverty and puts the guy in jail for a year. And GENERAL ELECTRIC APPLIANCES SAVE - 30 20 G.E.
