You can visit it too - for a whole week beginning on Aug. 5. Dogpatch, if you recall your comic strips of yesteryear, is the place wherein reside some most interesting characters. The most famous are Abner Yokum and Daisy Mae Scragg - he who spends most of his time escaping -- designs, especially on Sadie Hawkins Day. USA. Thursday, July 22, 1982 by Michele Barlmess her matrimonial typical day in Dogpatch, WEST VALLEY VIEW -- Abner and Daisy arent the only colorful characters in Dogpatch. Take his parents Mammy and Pappy Yokum. Then, of course, theres Marryin Sam, And Mayor Dawgmeat - not to be confused with Mayor Muir. We cant forget Moonbeam McSwine or Lonesome Polecat and the Scragg Brothers. And who can fail to recall Evil Eye Fleagle. Or that most unforgettable character of all, Earthquake McGoon. -- On a typical day in Dogpatch, US, any one of these, or a host of other colorful characters, can cause you to hold your sides as they reel off their lines and perform fheir antics. Utahns who have had concerns over the MX missile issue can easily identify with the Dogpatch citizens who are about to be forced to leave their town so the government can blow it up with a test missile. But the message will be overshadowed by the humor. Capp was masterful in scripting the show and Johnny Mercers music doesnt take a back seat to anyones. The aim was to entertain. You have to laugh when Kirsten Brady (Daisy) sings that shes past her prime at 17. 1 should be so prime (and gorgeous). When the Murray Arts Council selected Lil Abner for its annual summer musical production, there were a few raised eyebrows. Following the majestic Camelot with a show based on a comic strip about hillbillies - how could that be? Easy. The council has no desire to appeal to only one segment of the community. We thought Camelot was wonderful, as was South Pacific, our initial offering, but we think Abner will be their equal. We did hope to offer something that might interest families and yet have enough meat to draw a solid cast and appeal to pure theater patrons. On the cast angle, success is evident. Only time will tell on the latter matter. Lil - General Bullmoose (Jim Smith) was wearing a shirt emblazoned with Single and Loving Itthe other night at rehearsal. He had to fight off Dan Brooks football player who (the plays Abner) for possession. Ah yes, rehearsals are fun. Abner has some all-sta- te beautiful music, offers many outstanding roles - more than and the average production bears a message that is especially timely in Utah. - For years, my roommate, Janet, and I have been telling Miss Swendy Given Award TAYLORSVILLE. Well, this summer Craig is on stage, and jealous though I am, delightfully Im eagerly awaiting Pappy Yokums solution to Dogpatchs problem the only scene Ive yet to witness in rehearsal. Craig makes a fine hillbilly. Ditto Leslie Allen, the feisty Mammy Yokum one of the fine character roles the stage offers women. Did you know that because most musicals were written by men, there are few prime roles for women beyond the leading lady types such as Eliza Doolittle, Marne and Dolly? A1 Capp apparently felt women had some value to mankind. Or he wouldnt have created Daisy er - - selected.
