The gingerbread man who ran away was found yesterday (Wednesday) in the basement of Western Hills elementary. Kindergarten students taught by Chris Newell made a large gingerbread man and popped him in the oven to bake while they went out to recess. When they returned to the classroom, the gingerbread man had gone. Students knew their teacher couldnt have taken him away because she had spent the entire recess with them, so they began a search t hroughout the school for their missing treat. The first stopping place was the principals office, but no gingerbread man was hiding there. However, principal William B. Mansell took advantage of the opportunity to visit with the children and explain a little about his work as principal, the teacher said. The next stop was with the school secretary, but, although she too was willing to explain her work to the group, no gingerbread man was found hiding in her files. The anxious students checked out several other classrooms, including the other kindergarten classes, then went in search of the schools custodian, Bruce Holmberg, feeling sure that in his work around the school he might have seen the truant. Mr. Holmberg took the students on a tour of his boiler room, without results, then to the storage room, but still no gingerbread man. As the children reached the basement, a slight spicy smell reached their noses and a suggestion was made that perhaps their noses could lead them to the missing goody. Sherlock Holmes had nothing on the Western Hills youngsters - those noses led them right through the basement to an old desk placed in storage, and there at last, was their gingerbread man - baked to perfection and just waiting to be eaten - because that is what gingerbread men are for.
