Cottonwood had won the toss to sit out while the Lancers and Titans battled. At least one principal had suggested that all teams wear dark jerseys, but was overruled. The start of the second contest was held up for more than 30 minutes while officials worked to solve the dilemma. Finally, the game was started with both teams in their white jerseys. Granger was attired totally in white, while the Colts had gold pants and helmets. someone had outfitBy half-timted about three-fourth- s of the Cottonwood team in dark practice jerseys. Ironically, all of the scoring had been done in the first half. Granger will now go on and play Bountiful tomorrow (Friday) at 3 p.m. on the Brave turf. Bountiful finished second in a tough Region GRANITE PARK. The football season came to an abrupt end here Tuesday for Cottonwood and Olympus, while Granger found new life. The Lancers captured Region Threes three-waplayoff with a victory over Olympus in a then downed Cottonwood under identical circumstances to capture the leagues final playoff berth. The teams had tied with records in regular season play, the Titans having defeated Granger, which beat Cottonwood. The Colts upset Oly along the way to create the tie situation. The need for the playoff was established Friday when Granite Cottonwood was nipped Oly beaten by Cyprus and Granger blanked Skyline y 7-- 0 d two-perio- mini-gam- e, 9-- 0 2-- 3 e, 7-- 28-- 6 17-- Fiasco Bowl Four race. Region Three officials had egg on their faces Tuesday after the Lancers beat the Titans and prepared to meet Cottonwood. Evidently someone assumed that Olympus, a 39-- 0 regular season winner over Granger, would repeat the feat and told both Cottonwood Bountiful, like Olympus, owns a lopsided win over the Lancers. But it is a revamped Granger team the Braves will face, especially on defense. Coach Mike Fraser was forced into some changes that paid off as the Lancers clawed their way to post-seaso- Wind Is Factor combination of affairs at the beginning and the end of the game Tuesday spelled the end of an up and down season for Olympus. A stiff wind blowing from the south proved to be a factor in the game. Winning the toss, the Titans automatically elected to receive. Granger chose to defend the south the Lancers goal. Leading again took the wind to start the seA touchdowns, One Last Chance Titans had the ball all through the second half, stopping themselves on one occasion with a pass interception by Keith Jenson. Operating from the 20 after a Lancer punt, the Titans drove down field with quarterback Bob Maycock forced to the air when the Lancers contained Tom Pritchett on the ground. Two penalties put the Titans on the Lancer eight and on second down Maycock hit Mike Maxwell with what appeared to be a touchdown pass. That was nullified by a holding call, after which Lancer Gary Watts turned in a pair of outstanding defensive plays, first blocking a pass, then sacking Maycock on third down. That brought up fourth down. Maycocks pass was intercepted by Jenson, who knew immediately that he should have simply knocked the ball down. Operating from its own six, the half. first-perio- field Friend booted a Lancer lead with goal to post a the wind at his back at the 9:36 mark. A pass interference call set up the play. Again the wind was a factor for the Lancers, forcing a short Colt punt. A Cottonwood face mask penalty and some hard running by Clark and sophomore Randy Weiss gave the Lancers a first down at the Colt nine and from there Medina found Mourtisen in the end zone with 5:35 still showing on the clock. Friends PAT was f wide of the mark. A pass interception and a fumble stopped two other Granger thrusts. Medina finished that contest with 7x16 pass completions for 85 yards, while Weiss accounted for 63 rushing. Cottonwood crossed only once, as time ran out in the first half. Fraser admits the road is an uphill one for his team, but feels the progress it made during the The Buoyed by two successive shutouts posted by its defense, coupled with the bitter memory of the earlier meeting with the Titans where the defense had been shred- ded for three Lancers Strike Early 3-- 0 Oly Dominates 7-- 0, cond unlike Olympus, the Colts never really threatened. Lancers got out of a hole because Medina is also the teams punter. From shotgun formation with 2:21 left, Medina quick kicked from near the end zone and the ball rolled dead on the Titan 17. Rick Clark went off tackle for the final three yards and Harvey Friend booted the PAT. That was virtually the end of the Lancers offensive output. play. n d the Lancers dominated early play, forcing the Titans to punt into the wind. Operating from the shotgun formation, Lancer signal caller Lonnie Medina found split receiver Matt Mouritsen across the middle for a gain to set up the games only score with just over a minute left in the first half. Using the overmatch between the small Lancet defensive backs and Mark Snyder, Maycock again drove his team down field, picking up 20 yards, 12 and 13 on completions and 20 on a pass interference call against the Lancers. But with a first down at the six, the Titans tried a screen pass and Lancer Curt Hooley picked it off in the line with less than half a minute left to play, sealing the Titans bitter fate. Statistically, Olympus held a big edge with 11 first downs to Grangers six. The Titans had 160 yards of offense, 110 through the 6-- 5 first-hal- mid-fiel- d air. Granger got excellent performances from Medina, Scott Bocek, Curt Page, Hooley and Mouritsen.
