Because better fuel economy is such an important factor in our lives today, I'm going to devote two columns to this subject. First, Ill explain the importance of proper maintenance and pass along a few tips. Next week, Ill cover what you, as the driver, can do to save gas. SAVING GAS THROUGH PROPER MAINTENANCE. The first place to practice efficiency is in your engine. With a car thats propermore miles per ly tuned, you can expect gallon. Other items that insure good mileage are proper ignition timing, cleaning & lubricating the automatic choke & heat riser, cleaning and replacing of the air filter and fuel filters, servicing of the pollution control devices, occasional carburetor cleaning and adjusting, In general, the proper maintenance of your engine is paramount for you achieving the best possible mileage. Keeping your exhaust system in good repair is important. If the exhaust has to fight its way out, engine efficiency is reduced. Thus, you use more gas. Keep your brakes and clutch adjusted properly. If theyre dragging, your engine is working harder. Did you know that underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by 10 to 20 percent? Most cars on the road ryn with underinflated tires. If your tires are wearing more on the outer-side- s than in the middle, youre probably guilty. Check your owners manual for the correct tire pressure. Speaking about tires, radial tires definitely improve mileage; possibly up to 3 mpg. The less resistance to the road your car has, the more efficient your engine runs and the more gas you save. One last point about tires. Snow tires increase gas consumption because they increase road resistance. Put them on as late as possible and remove them as soon as you believe its 6 transfer case modification TRUCKS DIESELS 460 Installed $U(2)5 V T & 34 T. The smell of gas, especially when starting the car, usually means a flooding condition or a rich condition in your carburetor settings. Keep a gas mileage record. It will keep you informed or make you aware of any changes In your cars gas performance. When buying oil, a lighter weight oil reduces friction and lubricates better than a heavier weight oil. It also takes less engine power to pump. Thus a 10W or a mild weight (10W 40W) will save you gasoline, especially during the colder months. Its my opinion, you should change your oil every 5,000 miles or 5 months. Its also a low cost protection.
