Will a ground-source heat pump really Sensible Home James Dulley provide $3 offree heat for each $1 on myutility bills? How comfortableis it year-round? — W. H A: A ground-source heat pump (GSHP) ts an extremely efficient year-round system. Overitslife, a GSHP can save the typical family more than $10,000onutility bills as compared to installing a standard system. If you have an old gas furnace, it may make economic sense to add a GSHP. For each $1 on your monthly utility bills, a ground-source heat pump draws an additional $3 of free heat fromthe earth. In effect, it uses your yard as a giant solar collector to provide heat for your homein the winter. The heating comfort with a GSHPis excellent. The “chilly” feeling, common with ordinary heat pumps,is eliminated. Cooling output is strong and steady. CASUAL: (Continued from Page 3) ribbed cotton that feels like velvet and suits dressy or casual upholstery. Quilted silks, carved velvets, washed denim, linen in damask designs and mohair/silk combinations are other upholstery offerings. Paisley, plaid, checks and toile appeared in many collections. When the colors are coordinated, two or more ofthese patterns work togeiaer — at least in the hands of professional designers. Leopard-skin patterns continue to be popular on pillows, chairs and ottomans, and as throws. Texture, such as a basketweave design or an embossed pattern, is the watchword for fabrics. Some manufacturers showed roomsettings with a monochromatic theme that weren't dull, thankstothe rich texture of the fabrics. Upholstery designers are using dressmaker details in a literal fashion, such as a contrast bandof fabric secured to achair or sofa skirt with large buttons. : Chintz, so popular in the late 80s and early 90s, has almost disappeared, except as a cover on a few traditional pieces Leather upholstery continues strong. frequently shown in a matte rather than shinyfinish. * Colors. Taupe and variations of earth tones emerge as the most prevalent color in fabrics. Woodsy For the greatest comfort and improved air quality (for allergy sufferers), choose one of several new two or three-output level models. These constantly fine tune the heating and cooling output to the need of your house. In the summer, a ground-source heat pump switchestoa super-efficient central air-conditioner. As it is cooling your home,it heats your hot waterfor free. With an optional heat exchanger, it can heat your water four times more efficiently in the wintertoo. A GSHPactually recycles the heat energy in your home. In the winter, it draws heat out of the ground making it cooler. In the summer, the GSHP reverses and exhausts the heat to the cool ground for use next winter. Most GSHP’s workby circulating a water/antifreeze solution through smail plastic pipes buried in the ground. Since the ground is warmerthan the outdoorair in the winter and cooler in the summer. efficiency is high. One of the most efficient GSHP designs, called a DX system. circulates the refrigerant in small copper tubes in the ground. This requiresless piping and eliminates the need for an extra heat exchanger and circulating pump. GSHP’s are very reliable. The entire unit is located indoors (no. noisy outdoor condenser fan is needed) soit is protected from the weather. It is a very simple ¢evice greens standalone or mix with the brown tonesin prints that are often leaf designs. Sage green and pale olive are more prevalent than bright shades and are sometimes combined with purple. The palette is generally so subdued that the occasional bright red sofa or chair was a welcomesight. Thayer Coggin introduced alipstick red leather wing chair, the Pasadena, $5,495 retail, that comes with silver-, gold- or bronze-leaf legs. * Casegoods. Wood finishes also pay homage to the environment with earthy tones, golden honey browns or pale shades of sand. Several manufacturers showed cabinets, bookcases and occasional tables with doors or drawers of fake book spines. John Widdicomb introduced a Mario Buattadesigned faux book cabinet for with few movingparts to wear out. Some GSHP’s use two-speed compressors to provide two output levels. Other models use two sepatate smal! compressors (just one or both run). For ultimate comfort and efficiency, three-level models use one small and one medium size compressor.
