Their coating of dust to the perennial puncture is to fill reminded me that they too should be prepared for the summer season. I stoppedat the local bike shop, and they offered sometips for a spring bicycle tuneup. Here are their suggestions for making your bike safe for the season. Start by filling yourtires to the maximum air pressure that is stamped on the tire sidewall Keeping yourtires properly filled Outdoors reduces rim and tire wear and TLR makes your bike easier to ride. Adjust the brakes and replace any frayed or broken cables or the tubes with a leak sealant. Prodwom brake pads. Then oil the ucts such as Flat Attack, No Flats, chain, crank, wheel bearings, and or Slime will seal small punctures other pivot points. Avoid penetrat- caused bythorns, glass, nails, and ing oils which will get into the other road hazards. Another solution is to install a bearings and soften the grease. They act as a cleaner instead ofa tire liner. These liners are made of lubricant, andwill lead to prema- heavy vinyl! and are thick enough ture wear. Instead use silicone or to stop most thorns andtacks. With your bikes tuned up, take teflon lubricants. Finally, adjust the seat and han- your family for a spring ride on dle bars for proper riding height, one of the many open hillside and make sure that all nuts are trails. Gun control activists want ban on ‘deceptive’ ads By LINNETT MYERS Chicago Tribune WASHINGTON — The maga zine ad presents a peaceful scene A mother tuckingherlittle girl into bed, a window's ruffled curtains in the background. But starkly overlaid are photos of two semiautomatic handguns, as the caption reads, “Self-protec tion is morethan your right.. it's yourresponsibility.” Ask Lynn Dix what she thinks of such ads, which handgun control activist Sarah Brady is now trying to ban, and she'll say that they're an “outrage.” Dix blames a handgunforthe death of her son. On the otherside ofthe country, back her up are laid out in her Organization's 25-page petition which demands that the FTC ban ads that suggest that “a handgun will increase the safety and security of the consumer andhis or her family in the home.” But Brady's facts and figures may notnecessarily meet the commission's definition of “deception” in advertising “If you had to boil it down it's deceptionifit would mislead a reasonable consumer,” said Barry Cutler, an attorney whountil 1993 was director of the commission's Bureau of ConsumerProtection. “When you get to safety, the commission is usually much the adsring true to Gary B. The result was “disappointed kids,” he said, while the gun ads are “potentially lethal.” But that ad's deceit was also clear-cut; hidden wires made the toy fly. Unlike the toy manufacturer, Colt, Beretta and other gun life. that certain gun ads are “deceptive” and should be banned The ultimate question before the FTCisthis: Is it false advertising to claim that a handgun will protect its owner? Brady, who is chairwoman of the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, is convinced that handmeant for protection end up innocent victims far more going to dismiss this out of hand, like a Danish pastry that isn’t makers attacked in the petition have independent research that says guns can be effective in selfoften than criminals. Catch that elusive world record largemouth and becomean instant millionaire. Well, Collins and his partner were fishing a cove in Harvey Arm at Lower Otay Reservoir in San Diego County. They were using crayfish in search of big bass. Collins’ partner already had boated a 10 1/2-pound largemouth. Now Collins was fighting what he thought was a world record bass. He had a record, all right. A state-record blue catfish that tipped the certified scale at 82.1 pounds. By nearly 20 pounds,it shattered the previous recordset at Irvine Lake last November. RalphOrr ofPinon Hills landed a 62.3-pound blue catfish, three days after Irvine Lake employee Dan Connolly of Orange caught and released a 73-pound blue catfish before it was verified by the California De nent of Fish and Game (DFG). Collins’ catch Wednesday was verified by San Diego County Lakes biologist Larry Bottroff, a former DFG official, but it still needed verification by the DFG, which wasn’t readily available Wanting to throw thefish back into the lake so someone else could experience the thrill of catching it, Collins was stuck, until a bait dealer offered to house the fish in his truck tank “It’s in intensive care andif it survives itll be brought back to the lake and released (after verification), said Jim Brown, San Diego County Lakes spokesman Collins was fishing in 15 feet of water, using 20-pound [ron-thread line, which he reported tore through weeds, and took 15 minutes to bring thefishin.
