Fallwell’s message, and the message of similar ‘‘Christian patriots” is clear. Communism is a godless movement, clearly the work of Satan. Christianityis the creation of God, and Americais a Christian nation. Therefore, anything which opposes godless Communism is on the side of God. Dr. W. Cleon Skousen, of Salt Lake City, who founded the FreemanInstitute, is a vigorous opponent of communism and a strong advocate of patriotic Americanism. When Skousen speaks in terms of “right” or “left,” however, he does not use them in the same context as many other people. “Tt is terribly unfortunate that the writers on political philosophy today have undertaken to measure various issues in terms ofpolitical ‘parties’ instead of political ‘power’,”’ writes Skousen. He terms the “‘left"’ as being the extreme where there is too muchcontrol, too muchpolitical oppression, too much government. He said the founding fathers called it “‘tyranny."’ He termsthe extreme “right” as being anarchy, wherethereis no government, no law, no systematic control, and no governmental power. He seeks a Political balance between the two, “the balanced center.”’ Skousen believes the U.S. Constitution can be preserved only through achieving this balanced center, which means bringing about a political equilibrium between the states and the federal government. The states would be responsible for internal affairs and the federal government would confine itself to those areas which could not be handled fairly or effectively by the individualstates Skousen, a devout Mormon, encompasseshis church’s view that the U.S. Constitutionis a divinely inspired document. In a recent University of Utah forum featuring Dr. Ray R. Canning, university sociologist; Esther R. Landa. of Salt Lake City, prominent Salt Lake City leaderof the Jewish community and Dr. Skousen, Canningdiscussed extremism on both sides of the political spectrum. Canningoutlined the tactics of extremists, who “lean heavily toward absolutism,”’ listing five examples. 1. Hiding behind fronts; taking on protective coloration. Communist fronts project themselves as “peace lovers’ and ‘seekers after socialjustice.’ Right wing extremists try to establish a ““near-exclusive concern for strong families, the rightto life, and patriotism proven through anti-Communism.”" 2. Misusing the protections of a free society, Gus Hall, former executive secretary of the Communist Party USA, whenasked if he believed the Bill of Rights should cover the John Birch Society said, "No, the John Birch Society is out to destroy the Bill of Rights." Another Communist California Scorcher Winds Frustrating WearyFirefighters events in Poland and reports on Russian youth show “communism is an aberration it's not a normalwayofliving for humanbeings. “And I think we are seeingthefirst beginning cracks, the beginning of the end. This article examines the views of conservative groups, including rightwing Christians,a loose coalition being called the ‘‘new right.” By JOSEPHINE ZIMMERMAN Herald Staff Writer In the past, patriotism has been the emphasis of veterans organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans, and also of the schools. Recently, however, a chorus of right wing political activity committees and ‘‘Christian patriots” like Jerry Fallwell have joined traditional conservatives like the Freeman Institute in promoting Americanism. This can happen only in an atmosphere of freedom with responsibility, responsibility which is increasingly selfimposed as we mature — asits reasonableness becomes understood. Esther Landa comments about the term “Moral Majority,” in her discussion: ‘When I first heard it, I thought that since I'm not of the ‘Moral Majority,’ I guess I'm consigned to the immoral minority,” “But the title gives it away; only the majority is moral; therefore all minorities are immoral.
