The Justice Department says the men tried to use the bogus checks and letters of credit to buy a part interestin the Salt Lake City company and then unload the stock before the worthless checks could be returned. Federal attorneys said Wednes- day the men are being investigated on similar charges ‘‘in about 35 states” in connection with schemes through the First London Bank & Trust Company, Ltd. Thefederal agents said the British West Indies ‘‘bank’’ operates out of a back room in curio shop in Kingston,St. Vincent. The defendants are Kevin B. Krown and Herman N. Rosenberg, both of New York, Glen J. Palmer and LorenF. Well elton. By a6-5 vote, the committee sentto the floor with a ‘do pass” recommendation a resolution calling for a constitutinal convention to draft a right to life amendmentto the U.S. Constitution. Committee members approved the resolution after voting down,5-6, a motion by Senate Minority LeaderCy Chase, D-St. Maries, to hold the concurrent resolution in committee. Chasetold his colleagues several questions concerning the proposal should be answered before sending the measureto thefloorfor full Senate consideration, which could come Friday. The vote on the resolution was taken after a minimum of committee discussion and testimony by a parade of witnesses, most of whom favored the PI I Sen. When bank officials called the shop in Kingston. they said a man at the other end would claim funds were on deposit to cover the checks, when — in fact — thedrafts were worthless.
