Homemakers Find Quitting Smoking Tough By MICHAEL J. CONLON WASHINGTON (UPI) — Thelatest government report on cigarette smoking — which found a growing lung cancer problem among women — also concludes that women nave a hardertimetrying to quit smoking than men do. The differences, it appears, are in the mind rather than the body. a surgeon general's report, called ‘The Health ences of Smoking for Women,” reviewed onealstudies of persons who sought professional hel trying to drop the habit. “One group of women that seemsto have great difficulty in giving up smoking in treatment is emakers,’’ the report said. One study, it added, found that such women ‘‘explained that cigarettes served as companions and they reported difficulties of being without adult companyall day and of being deprived of outside activities as obstacles to giving up smoking... “Cigarette have also been described as a means of temporarily partitioning the day, of achieving physical autonory fromchildren and of providing ie differentiation,” it said. Other studies, the report said, have found that women smokers ‘‘face more life stress than men”’ and in general are moreoutgoing than nonsmoking Heis more proud of another statistic: “Two hundred and four restaurants have come and here inoynpeeal since opened up. ere still am.” a Douglas dished outhis first steaming bow!of super-secret chili here in 1914, when he returned to his hometown after two years of cooking for the ‘k Island Railroad, three years for the Katy and nine years at a Montana mining camp. ‘echnically, though, his local counter career started years earlier. yeyused to call me the best soda jerk in town,” he smiles, shoving his white pipes 2a further back on his id. ““T led that fountain — allnine flavors — better ’n any f fis first cafe — with its deer’s kcad mounted on the wall, chairs instead of stools and 32-volt Delco generator that powered the town’s first commercial electric lights ““cept for the theater” — was tax-prej rationfirm. is doesn't mourn the loss, though. “Long's I got mesix stools and a few tables and my friends, that’s all I want to fool with,” he says, setting down the dead cigar. ly building’s all paid for. One study, it said, found that ‘‘women smokersare also characterized apprehension and tension, and that these characteristics arerelated to an inability to give up smoking. In terms of physical withdrawal symptoms, the report said, none of the studies to date have indicated that womensuffer more than men after they stop smoking. At the sametime, the study said, more research needs to be done on the role ical differences between men and women may play in stopping smoking. The report said the death rate for lung cancer among women hastripled from fewer than 5 deaths r 100,000 in the early 1960s to 15 deaths per 100,000 Prism. It added tinat the disease is growingso fast among womenit could surpass the death rate for breast cancer by 1983. The Tobacco Institute, a trade group, disputed that conclusion, saying the increase maynotbe real but maybe the resultof better detection methods. ‘The study said one factor that maybe treated too lightly by both men and women whotry to stop smoking is the fact that occasionalrelapses are natural and expectable. “Manyindividuals whoare trying to abstain view a single slip as evidence that they havefailed, rather than as a natural and rece Teaction to a stressful situation,” it sald.
