If the water shoots up outof the earth,it is called a geyser. it bubbles up quietly, it is called a hot spring Waterin a hotspring can be pleasantly warm. At Warm Springs, Ga. the temperature of the water is about 87 degrees Fahrenheit. The water in hoi springs also can be much hotter. At Hot Springs, Ark., the water temperatureis 143 degrees. And in Yellowstone National Park, Wyo., the water in manyof the hot springs is almost boiling. Some springs are hot because their water circulates far down in the earth, where there is great heat. The hot oe in Georgia and Arkansas are of is t Most hot springs. though, are found where there are active voicanoes. New Zealand and Japan, which have many hot springs, are two such places. There, ten rock coming up from deep down through the ground gets hot. If this water comes to the surface,it is - a hot spring. The water of a hot spring carries many minerals dissolved in it. This usually gives the water an unusual smell taste. Some doctors believe the mineral water in hot springs is helpful in treating certain diseases, such as arthritis. Hot springs mayoccur in cold places. For example, Iceland has thousands of hot springs. Water from many of them is piped into homes for heat and hot water.
