By LETITIA (TISH) BALDRIGE Dear Ms. pee My widow friend insists her name will always be Mrs. James Smith and not Mrs. Margaret Smith. She was very put out by my introducing her to a group as “Mrs. Margaret Smith,” and said that not only wasit in poor taste, but thatit looked as though she were divorced. Would you clarify this argument. please? — G.W. Providence After a fow years of widowhood, most women drop their husband’s first name and me known by their given names — Le., “Mrs. Margaret Smith,” simply for efficiency’s sake. It’s a logical, Proper development, even if a divorced woman is also known by her given name with a “Mrs.” preceding it. However,if your widow friend wishes to be known always as ‘‘Mrs. James Smith” for the rest of life, you should accord her that courtesy. It will be really great in that new world out there when we drop the “Mrs.”’, ‘‘Mis8” and “Ms.” altogether, and always refer to women by their given nameand their last name. When benefit committeelists, church or club membership lists read like this; we will have come a Adams, George an Beuchtel, Richard and Anne Fortnighters held the annual holiday party for husbands and guests at the home of Dr. and Mrs William G. You might look at a woman who prefer so to have her namelisted as ‘‘Miss" and conclude she is older than forty. Or at a woman who lists herself as “Ms” by preference and you conclude she is younger than 40. One really should not be conjecturing about such things as age and marital status. One should be concentrating on the person. Dear Ms. Baldrige: As an executive secretary who has worked for one man for 22 years, I do not consider myself ‘‘old”’ — even if I'm in myfifties. My boss has always called me by my first name, and I have always called him “Mr. —'’ I don’t mind this discrepancy, because I began mycareerlong before the women’s movement. My complaint is that the young menin this organization all call me by myfirst Hutchison, Abilene, Kans.. First ofall, the executive secretary is a very impor- tant cog in any business, large or small,if she is proficient. She (or he) does have an influence on the decision-making of the company, by virtue of giving advice “straight from the shoulder’ and by virtue being in control of the CEO's schedule and priority mail and messages. A secretary has to have special skills and years of training and experience to be able to assume this role. Many have done it.
