Show TVI4—THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Monday, August 20, 1979 Network Will Make Amends To Col. Blimp-Type Fellows By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — American movies once were populated by a small and endearing army of Colonel Blimp-type Englishmen who contributed a dash of old-school-tie humor in comedies and ofttimes added menace to enrich gothic horrortales Whocan forget C. Aubrey Smith poppingupin pith helmet in the midst of an African jungle story, or Reginald Denny as a regimental commanderin Injah? Nigel Bruce, as Dr. Watsonin ‘‘Sherlock Holmes” and other roles, was the perfect Throttlebottom. Basil Rathbone was an excuisitely English highbrow as villain or hero. Nor could anyonebuttle as effectively, or archly, as Eric Blore and Arthur Treacher. Findlay Currie had no peer as a felon of the worst sort. Lamentably, these delightfully stuffed shirt characters haveall but disappeared from the screen since the heyday of studio contract actors when almost every film factory included a British character player. Television has neglected the thoroughgoing Britisher almostfrom its inception. But ABC makes ammendsthis fall with ‘The Associates,"’ a new series starring Wilfred Hyde-White It seems almost a shamethathe isn’t SIR Wilfred Hyde-White who will play the senior partner in a prestigious New York Citylaw firm in the half-hour sitcom. Hyde who married James II and becamethe mother of two English queens, Anne, and Mary who married William of Orange. Alas, Hyde-White’s branch of the family was disassociated from the royal sapling. All the same, his forebears werearistocrats and landholders wholived in a greathouse in Bourton-on-the Water, Glouces ter. At 76, Hyde-White has been an actor for more than 50 years. He is white-haired, slightly, delightfully befuddled andaltogethercontent to be playing in an American TVseries. “T have a theory aboutthe disappearace of thefullbodied Englishman from American films,’ said Hyde-White in an accentrichly redolent of Mayfair Eton and other enclaves of hallowed British tradition. “Tt was before my time when English actors played villains moreoften than not. Then along came the war and the Germans were madethe bloody bad men and Englishmen lostout. “After the war James Mason and Rex Harrison came into their own but they weren't in the same category. They played various nationalities. Best remembered among movie audiencesfor his BURLY GEORGE KENNEDY, a pilot himself, gets high professionallyin the ‘Airport’ movies. He is currently starring in the mostrecent of the airborne disaster films, “Concorde — Air- port "79." It is George’s fourth time around as the tough, cigar chewing Joe Patroni, the only recurring character in the Universal string of hits. (UPI Telephoto) perfect portrayal of Colonel Pickering in “My Fair Lady,’ Hyd le-White is the archtypical upperclass, faultlessly educated, slightly bumbling English gentleman. Hyde-White might be sitting on England’s throne today had destiny beena bit less feckless. He lays no | claim to royalty, but perhaps he could. In truth, he traceshis lineage to King James II. His grandmother. six generations removed, was Ann Blunder Creates Confused Unit The Army's smallest and most confused unit is created through a bureaucratic blunder and is manned by a talent agent, an accountant, a mechanic and a college dropout, on ‘‘The 416th,” a half-hour comedystarr- ing Richard Lewis, to be broadcast Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 5.
