Inter-mountai- n : PERMANENT ROAD BUILDING NOW A WAR NECESSITY That the government has finally awakened to the fact that the immediate building of permanent roads between points of supply and distribution is essential to the nations very best interests is amply exemplified in the following excerpt taken from The Official Bulletin published by the committee on Public Information, Washington, March 19, 1918. The following announcement has been authorized by the Council of National Defense : The Council of National Defense has given its formal approval of all measures designed to facilitate the use of the motor truck in transportation whenever it can be utilized. Its efforts in this direction have been directed through the Highways Transportation Committee. Thin the States Councils of Defense and other agencies it is urgng all communities as far as possible to adopt the motor truck to their local needs and encourage its use in any way to help existing transportation problems. The truck is proving of great service in many districts in relieving congestion in freight terminals. The Council has just passed the following resolutions: Resolved, that the Council of National Defense approves the widest possible use of the motor truck as a transportation agency, and requests the State Councils of Defense and OTHER STATE AUTHORITIES to take all necessary steps to facilitate such means of transportation, REMOVING ANY EXISTING REGULATIONS THAT TEND TO RESTRICT AND DISCOURAGE SUCH USE. The perfect efficiency of the motor truck as an agency of transportation requires equally perfect efficiency in the road. Nothing so tends to restrict and discourage such use as obsolete and impractical highways. That the national government, states and counties throughout the entire country appreciates this is thoroughly shown by the followThe expenditures ing figures: for highways this year in the United States will reach the amazing total of $263,096,601.00 as against $$118,797,750.00 last year. The state of Texas last yar expended for this purpose $5,000,000.00, this year it will expend $25,000,000.00. Iowa will expend $15,000,000.00, Arkansas California will $12,000,000.00, expend $12,000,000.00, Arizona $3,000,000.00. All this only goes to prove that Utah countys effort toward road building was most oportune. That the people who were behind it and who voted for it were cognizant of impending necessity, and it is certainly to he hoped that those misguided indviduals who lost for their county one of its greatest opportunities for development, have by this time seen the error of their ways.
