Show WEEKLY REFLEX r DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 1, 1979 ' tallipmeirafi " i'. By DAVE WIGHAM r't?tr ry The new regions have now been set, for the next four years, as the Utah High School Activities Association finalized the realignment this past week. THE SIX schools in the Davis County area were affected like this. Viewmont and Bountiful joined the ranks of the 3A schools and were placed in the new Region Five. That region consists of Viewmont, Bountiful, Woods Cross, South, West and Highland. As one can see West and Highland also opted to join the 3A ranks. DAVIS REMAINS in Region Four and is joined by Ogden, Ben Lomond, Box Elder, Logan and Bear River. In the 4A ranks the region remains the same with the exception of the two Bountiful schools dropping out. Clearfield, Layton, Bonneville, Roy, Weber and Sky View will keep on playing each other for a living. t n X vX' T ByDAVEWIGHAM BOUNTIFUL The secret of any basketball team is how well they work together as a team unit. Nothing could describe a team better than those words do in describing the Viewmont team. ALLYEARCoachRonJohan-se- n has indicated that when his club plays as a team they can play with anyone. Last week in their win over Weber these words came true. All five starters played a big role in winning that game. Kelly Downs got a hot hand from the outside to pull the Vikes close. Rugged Doug Day pulled down a key rebound and put it back in for two points when the Vikes needed it. GUARDS Brad Thacker and Jim Miller each scored key buckets down the wire when they needed the points. Finally junior Paul Hansen scored what proved to be the winning bucket with 15 seconds left on a great baseline move. These five are the main reasons the Vikings are in second place in the tough Region One basketball league. Although the guards get most of the points, its the play of the other three that usually means the difference in winning and losing. DAY, DOWNS and Hansen play with the big boys, all of them usually give up a lot of height to their opponents but all of them usually hold their own. Its also their work on ' the boards that triggers the fast break that the two guards finish off the other end of the floor. This week the Vikes could make a strong bid for the league lead as they battle Clearfield on Friday and then get another shot at Roy on Tuesday. IN THE first round the xl Vi Vikings suffered a loss to Clearfield and these two teams plain and simply dont like each other. Bountiful is rivalry but we like to beat Clearfield as much as anyone. The series has really heated up in the last two years, noted one of the Vike starters. Again the key will be the play of the three unsung heroes of the Vikes as Day, Downs and Hansen will have to stop the one-tw- o punch of Roger Vincent and Russell Florence. These two played well in the first outing and the APPLAUDS SHOULD go out to the UHSAA this time around as they pulled off a great job in realignment. Some indicated the Darts of Davis were upset at the new region which split them from the other three county schools but in reality the Davis school got a great bargain. If the Darts had been placed in Region Five, with the three other county people, that would have made that region a powerhouse with the majority of the top clubs in the 3A ranks in one region. If that were the case then state tournament time would see some great clubs stay home while the other region would send some clubs that werent as good. THIS TIME around the game is at Clearfield which usually bothers some people but the Vikings have a habit of playing extremely well on the road. on the Tuesday following the Falcon game the Vikes host a fast improving Roy club. The Royals pulled off two wins last week as they downed both Bountiful and Then DUAL MEET Last week Bountiful High met Weber High for the dual meet championship in wrestling for region one. Both clubs were unbeaten and as witnessed. by these two grapplers the match was heated. Weber won the heavyweight division to come from behind to nip the Braves 27-2- 3. Layton. pre-seaso- ALL INDICATIONS are that Mark Sindle has broken out of a scoring slump. He scored 20 or more in both wins, which could prove to be fatal for teams in the league. Sindle came on strong a year ago to honors but has earn been a slow starter again this season. Fred Fernandes has been consistent in both scoring and defense and Jon Nickerson seems to be playing the best ball of his career. is playing Viewmont together right now and they are a good club. They want the Clearfield game, Roy too, to climb into first place. All three of these clubs are hot at this point, should be a great week for basketball. By DAVE WIGHAM - All-Sta- te WOODS CROSS One would think that if you were a high school basketball coach and through the first half of league play, and your team had an unbeaten record, everything would be rosy. NOT SO at Woods Cross. First of all with the second half of action beginning this week the coaches are concerned a little that the club will start feeling complacent about the games. tf Jl - BOUNTIFUL Basketball coach Mike Hall is seeing a trend being set by his young; club, and its a trend that he, doesnt really like. For some . reason we play the tough teams well and let up with the weaker ones in the league. Last week we played Roy a good game on the road then came back and stunk in a home game with Sky View. THE LOSS to Sky View was a hard one for the first year coach to take, since it was the Bobcats who were tied with the Braves for sixth spot and a shot at a state berth. The Braves arent out of the state picture yet but now theyll have to come up with some ; upsets to get into the tour- nament. In the next seven days the Braves could either get back into the state picture, stay where they are, or completely put themselves out of contention. To accomplish the first they could win both games, at Weber on Friday and then at Bonneville on Tuesday, a fete they could pull off. To stay in. the same situation they are in now they could split the two games this week. And if they want to fade into the sunset for another year they could drop both contests. WINNING BOTH games really isnt out of the question. In the first round the Braves had Weber beaten only to lose in- the final moments with some missed foul shots and then they beat the Lakers in that first encounter. Weber is coming off a loss of their own, to Viewmont, but the Warriors did the same thing in the first round. The Warriors are strong up front, ' Mark Montgomery poured in 33 points against the Vikings, while the Braves look to the guards for points. - DANS ELECTRIC PPLIANCE REPAIR Trouble Shooting Rewiring 1 getting the ball inside for the most part of the game and their guards really werent hitting from the outside, only the rebounding and second shots of Montgomery kept them in the contest. Bountiful has a zone defense of their own, it has been effective in some games while not in others. Up front the Braves will now look to senior Scott Stewart or Mike Nelson, juniors Clark Mabey and Frank Sessions. Reports also indicated that sophomore Danny Bell, who scored 12 against the Bobcats, will get the starting nod. THE BONNEVILLE game pits strength against strength as both teams rely on their for scoring. guards Sophomore Cory Sylvester is the leading point producer for the Lakers while Jm Perkins and Blaine Benard are the most consistent scorers for the Braves. Bountiful is still down after dropping the game last week to the Bobcats, but they also know that theyre not out of the state picture yet. These two games could go a long way in determining their future this year. A sweep would be great, a split acceptable, but a pair of defeats would be a disaster. IN THE Viewmont game the Vikes sagged inside on the NO SERVICE CHARGES big people and then used a full court press in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. The Warriors had trouble 376-10- 86 CLYDE JACKSON, one of the coaches at the school, noted that the team will have to be more prepared the second half, everyone will be gunning for us. Not only are we undefeated in region action but were also ranked high in the state standings and people love to beat the top clubs. Coach Jackson also pointed out the facts that the Wildcats have been involved in some close encounters and that this half of the season they play some of the top clubs on the road. ANOTHER problem for the Wildcats is the physical senior Brent Horton. Reports are that Brent is out for the year with an eye injury, which is a great loss to the Wildcats. ; The Wildcats have a full two game lead over the rest of the pack at the turn with Logan and Ogden tied for second with 2 marks. In the second half of the season the Cats have to play both these clubs on the road which is no easy task. come on strong to take the load off of his shoulders to some extent. RIGHT NOW though the Cats face another problem this week in their game with Ben Lomond. The Scots are riding high following their win over Davis this past week and they hope the home floor advantage will carry them past the Wildcats. At the start of the season the word was that the Scots were a one man team, Robby Tillman. In fact Tillman did carry the load for the Scots in the early going and is still one of the top scorers in Region Four with a 21 point average but several other players have Mr. Mac IN THE win over Davis last week the Scots were led by Ken Rigley who finished with 17 points for the game. For the year though Tim Woodward is averaging 13 points each league outing while Alan Montgomery is scoring at a 10.7 clip each game. It will be Montgomery, a 66 center, that will be called on to try to contain the Wildcats leading scorer Mark McCleery. Mark won round one between these two giants and the outcome of the game could come down to this battle reacting about the team becoming complacent this half of the season. Time will tell but this game could be a good measuring stick. again. MARK LeCheminant has been drawing the raves from his coaches as the most consistent player the Cats have. Much has been said about Bountiful and Viewmont going into the 3A ranks. Some think of it as a step down. All it is is a step in the right direction now they will compete against schools their own size. No more do they have to battle schools with twice their enrollment as they have in the past. Dont think for one minute that both schools will set the world on fire with state titles, no one is conceding anything to these schools coming from 4A. The 3A world is just as competitive as the 4A. As far as Davis is concerned they can still play the three other schools either in or more than likely in the Falcons won.
