BLODGETT - FARMINGTON Brent Armstrong has won the okay from the Davis County Commission to rezone a parcel of forest land which is located in the unincorporated area east of Farmington. THE COMMISSION approved the rezoning of the private property which is located between Lund and Glovers Lane, nearly a half-mi- le east of State Highway 106 (200 East) in an area zoned by the Forest Service. The rezoning was approved from F-- l to F-- 2 to allow Mr. : ' : trong. Among other changes recommended by the state study were establishment of a collection of young adult titles, and an increased probably too detailed to justify the cost incurred and that other standard reference tools which might be more useful are missing. Periodicals shouldnt be re- residents as Aunt Annie. IN MOVING for the rezoning, Comm. Morris F. Swapp said, I see nothing wrong with the change (of rezoning), and personally. Im envious of this man (Mr. Armstrong) because that is one of choice spots in all Davis County to have a home. no AS A result, by the time April rolls many of us have extra rolls of fat around, to greet the spring weather with. Not only doesnt it look as good, in my opinion, but it means buying new clothes and last, but certainly not least, it isnt healthy. Obviously, Im not alone in this feeling. I attended a Jogging Seminar recently at McKay-De- e Hospital in Ogden where Dr. Frank G. Yanowitz, an LDS Hospital of the Intercardiologist and mountain Human Performance Center, also at LDS, addressed hospital employees. He wasnt there to heap praise. WE HAVE a problem in this country," he said. That is the increased popularity of My job is to counteract that movement. There are now 180 million vs. 20 million runners. And while he said exercise doesnt cure every ill, such as believing that chronic exercise will necessarily lead to longer live, Dr. Yanowitz did give some pluses to g. exercise. THERE ARE three different types of exercise that produce three different results. The first enables a person to learn how to carry out a skill, play a game or dance, for instance. A second method increases strength and brings increased muscle size. And while he said those reasons for exercise were fine for some, they wouldnt give the best results for those just wanting to maximize health. Subject stickers were also urged for popular titles such as westerns and mysteries and it was recommended pamphlets be intertilled in the collection. GOP To Elect Party Leaders - Can- didates for positions in the Davis County Republican Party were announced today by Ralph Olmo, County GOP treasurer. HE SAID three political workers-tw- o from Bountiful and one from Fruit Heights-ha- ve been nominated for county GOP party chairman. Gene Peresich and Harry Gerlach, both of Bountiful, and Ted Stewart, an attorney from Fruit Heights, are seeking the party chairmanship. Mr. Peresich and Mr. Gerlach have served as legislative district chairmen during the past two years and Mr. Stewart has served as a district delegate to the county convention. RUBY PRICE, of Layton, is the only candidate to file thus far for the vice chair position, according to Mr. Olmo. Jay Hanson, of Centerville, who served last year as chairman of the Davis County Young Republicans, is the only nominee for secretary. Mr. Olmo said he will not as county seek GOP treasurer and there has been no other candidate file for this position. THE GOP county convention will be held Saturday, April 28, at 2 p.m. in the Farmington Elementary School multipurpose room. Candidates for any of the GOP party posts may be nominated and elected from the floor at the convention, Mr. Olmo explained, grb NOTING NECESSITY for quick action in that area the Weeding the study said, collection is a task requiring attention. immediate Completion of this task is critical because implementation of other recommendations," such as collection development, reorganization, change in cataloging procedures and physical arrangement are this upon dependent process. It added, A small public State Library. This is already being done to some extent. In addition, the board should study automated cataloging. Improvements could'Be made by adding facilities including soft furniture for those doing casual reading, with additional space gained from weeding allowing for wider aisles between existing shelving. It also recommended additional space between tables and acquisition of carousel book racks for popular paperbacks. This will allow more titles to be handled in less space and will free the shelf space currently occupied by the paperback THE ENTIRE collection hasnt been weeded in many years, the study continued, though some portions were weeded two years ago. A preliminary evaluation indicates some materials are staff to members FOR THOSE just starting out running isnt necessary or even recommended, he said. Brisk walking, running, swimming, bicycling and Nordic and Alpine skiing are also good forms of aerobic exercise. And for a lot of people, the activity is fun enough in and of itself that they dont have to consciously think of it as exercise. WE ALL can remember running the 100 yard dash in school or just trying to get away from that mean dog. It may have caused our heart beat to jump to a faster pace and we might even have started imitating a dog with a pant. That degree of exercise might have been excessive. Dr. Yanowitz said a persons maximum heartrate defines the maximum function for each individual. To determine your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from 220. Then, your exercise should be sufficiently vigorous to sustain your heart rate at 75 or 85 percent of maximum for 20 minutes at a time, several days a week. HE SUGGESTED exercising three times a week on alternate days. That activity produces metabolic changes and the muscles increase their capacity to take oxygen out of the blood. But just because you start a jogging program and stay at it for two weeks doesnt mean youll become a marathon runner overnight, he warned. Several factors determining the results youll achieve include intensity and frequency of exercise, age and initial level of fitness. THE YOUNGER you are, the more potential you have. But you are never too old, he said. The worse off you are to begin with, the more you are going to But again, dont try for improve. miracles overnight. Dont strain and start walking before you run. And if you dont like running, he said cycling, including indoors, skipping rope, ice and roller skating, rowing, bench or stair climbing can all help. On the other hand, tennis, bowling and golfing usually arent considered as aerobic unless done very vigorously. HOW WILL you know if youre reaching desired heartrate? Dr. Yanowitz advised taking your pulse 10 seconds after finishing the exercise to determine if you have reached the desired rate. "You will know when you are working your heart too much because you will be too much out of breath to carry on a conversation. When you are finished you shouldnt be too fatigued, just pleasantly tired." And, as any athlete or trainer will tell you, the warmup is as important or more so than the actual event or exercise. Warming up before strenuous activity will increase body temperature and increase blood flow. That will guard against muscle, tendon and ligament damage. By the same token, a gradual cooling off after youre done is just as important to prevent blood from pooling (which slows waste product removal, causing cramps). that exercise program shouldnt cause pain. But remember, we dont all have the same AND FINALLY, a good potential but we all have the potential to improve, he said. Opportunities for exercise are improving all the time in Davis County and nearby. One of the best places I know to begin a graduated exercise program, no the study said. With the present limited resources presently available to the Kaysville Library, using volunteers seems to be a logical choice. In general, libraries have found volunteers can contribute to successful library operations but that volunteer programs are effective only when carefully planned and administered. ENVIRONMENTAL Health Director Richard Harvey said ' he didnt think there would be much opposition to the move, preceded by a public hearing at which no opposition was voiced. That way, you can exercise up to your par. You set your own pace. There isnt anyone there to time you or spur you on. You can start by doing one pushup or walking the entire jogging area. Its up to you. I used to run the par course at Weber State College regularly, and hope to do so again when the weather permits. IN DAVIS County, Bountifuls par course in the 1800 South Park has already been used by some, and with warmer weather, should see a lot more use. And for those in Kaysville and Clearfield areas, planners are working to build par courses there. And back up in Weber County, Washington Terrace enthusiasts are working to complete a par course there, as well. But no matter what your pleasure, if at all possible, Id urge you to start some kind of an exercise program.
