Show WEEKLY REFLEX 1979 DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NOVEMBER 1, Woods K Ta'tes Title In Gross Country Take Look At State Tournament Selection Process ByDAVEWIGHAM - Woods SALT LAKE CITY Cross surprised a lot of folks last week as the young Wildcats claimed first place in the region cross country meet held at Sugarhouse Park near Highland High. THE CATS placed their, runners in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth to claim the; team title with a total of 31. South was second with 55 followed by Viewmont at 61 ByDAVEWIGHAM Its too late now to do anything but the Utah High School Activities Association should take a long look at the way the state 3A football tournament is set up. then THE REASON for the long look is the absence of Woods Cross from the event. They bill the event as the top sixteen teams in the state from 3A. Sorry without the Wildcats they arent even close. The mistake the Wildcats made was to be put in the strongest region of all. Need more proof, look at what the three teams from the league did. West manhandled the fourth place club from Region Six, Bountiful had a relatively easy time with the third place club from that same region and Highland did a number on the second place team from Region Four. has seven runners in the ' SOUTH TOOK first place in the individual race with ; Orullian winning ahead or Bountifuls Steve Tueller. South then picked up third with Ruekert but then the Wildcats did their thing. Marvin Gregorson was ; 1 . a little far fetched for has ten clubs but that igrans sixty per cent of the league goes. In Region Five three of six for fifty per cent. KHow about this for a solution. With four regions the top four go automatically. That gives you twelve clubs. Then Rom the rest of the state give Wildcard berths. Use the jeague records and consider the preseason outings and VIEWMONT then claimed the next four spots with Matt Goodrich, Randy Harrison, Alan Parker and Clark Terry. John Paul of Woods Cross was next m ed Curt Ives and Mark of Viewmont, James Thompson of Woods Cross IT DOESNT take much to figure out that a team with 5ie talent of Woods Cross has got the screw job this Jason. It shouldnt have to happen again. VIEWMONT claimed the junior varsity championship Region Five for being with their top finishers being Ford second, D. Peterson the league. In cross country each school - Going into last weeks final KAYSVILLE league game, things looked bright for the Davis football team. A win over Logan would give them first place in league action and a state encounter with the fifth place club from down South. GOING INTO this week the Darts are handing in the football pads for the year and gearing up for basketball earlier than usual. In the space of four days the Darts lost a heartbreaker to Logan 19-1- 8 and then on Sa- turday dropped an opening round state battle to a much bigger Highland crew 27-1- THE LOGAN game actually did the damage in more ways than one. Although not offering excuses from the coaches, they didnt mention a word, its tough to play two high school games in the space of four days especially when your opponent has ten days rest. but in the Logan contest the Darts saw senior quarterback Jeff Emery suffer a leg injury that kept him from playing any defense on Saturday against the Rams and very little offense. The Darts hadnt fully shaken the effects of the Not only the time factor Logan loss when they took the field on Saturday to meet one of the largest physical teams in the state. size advantage took its toll in the long run over the outmanned Darts. Davis looked as if they THAT HIGHLAND might surprise the Rams early as on their first two possessions they drove to the Ram ten yard line only to be stopped both times. The first four tries were runs which failed, the second series the Rams intercepted a pass in the end zone. Had the Darts scored at least once, the game would have taken an entirely different approach. The Ram size came out best on the second Ram score when running back Craig Smith took in a Rich Orr pass and scampered 60 yards for a heartbreaking loss to Logan didnt seem to help the Darts mentally in the Highland game either. DAVIS ENJOYED a good season under new headman layia Hcsr-oatio-a Ward Sawley. Bovs Basiiotlrall SMITH WAS almost a one man show since he scored two touchdowns and picked off two Dart passes. In that Logan game the Darts had to turn to junior quarterback Lynn Lloyd when Emery went down with the leg injury. Emery had passed for an 18 yard score to Bill Schiyver before he left. Lloyd performed well hitting for two scores through the air, one to Keith McNally and the other to Brent Hatch. LLOYD PLAYED well in the Highland game but the Darts simply couldnt contain the huge line for the Rams. Not only was the loss of Emery hard on offense but his presence was needed in the secondary where the coaches had to move McGill to a corner and then move in McNally. The loss of Emery plus the Layton City recreation will host boys basketball for the winter. Cost will be $6.50 and boys must be 12 years old and no older than 13 years old. Cut off date is Dec. 1, 1979. Lcytcn Coys D.:? Lo::j3 THE INJURY report on the Braves for this outing is still a little up in the air. A week ago Mason set a school record picking up 178 yards while Walls, who is a junior, picked up another 110 yards in the same game.
