This past season they came up with two 'region titles, a state crown and 'arunnerupspot to their credit. Things look bright for this next year as many of these gals n, selves another great year in d athletics. It seems to be a stan-dar- nowadays that the females at the school finish at or near the top in region throughout the various sports. THIS YEAR they managed to come up with three region championships, a state title, a runnerup spot in state and an Sports individual state champion. The region titles came in cross country, swimming and track. The state crown came in basketball. The second place in a state meet came in cross country and finally sophomore Becky Stokely came up a state champion on her own in swimming. TO START out the year the Vikes were a little down because they didn't make it into the state tournament in volleyball but there was no disgrace in this since their region turned out to be by far the toughest in the state. Evidence of that fact was the two finalists were from their league. Players like Steph Caputo, Patrice Mitchell and Deb Asper all performed well on the club which barely failed Quiz . Coach Lynn Dubois was pleased with the teams dedication and hard work and pointed to a possible state title this coming season. LINDA SMITH, Wendy and Miss Zeigler carried the colors in the tennis world and all three had good years for the V ikings. Then came winter and it was a good one for the Viewmont people as they won the state 3A basketball title. This marked the third year in a row they were in the finals and the second time they won. THE VICTORY over rival Woods Cross in the final was a good game with Steph Caputo, Patrice Mitchell, Deb Asper, Lisa Ballantyne and Linda Eames pulling out the win for the Vikings. Although they didn't win the region crown they came back strong when it counted in the state tournament. WHILE THEY were doing well on the court the gals were winning a region title in the water with the likes of Stokely, Cheryl Rosengreen, Joylynn Williams, Kris Jackson, Traci Cook, Beth Ensign, Cheryl blood, Julie Zirkel, Stacie Allred, Tina Hansen, Linda Dilcllo, Carrie Foresgren and Jill Prigmore. The main problem facing the basketball team was the fact they were in the toughest region in the state, both state finalists were from the league. Had they been in another region they would probably have made it to the tournament. TRACK TIME meant new names and faces, combined with some of the same athletes, to give the Braves a good club. They performed well all year and were fourth in the region meet. Deb Zuphelt, Laura Passry, Jennette Sever-iVal Speaks, Terrie Taylor, Shauna Youngblood and Julie Zirkel. These gals worked hard under the direction of their coach and put in many long hours of practice. THE FEMALE tennis team was also having a good year as they placed third in the region meet with Emily Johnson and Dianne Nuenswander representing the Bountiful school at the state meet. The Sox are getting pitching to go with their already available hitting. ITS AN interesting display because the Sox dont have all those millions to buy talent with. They dont have the best franchise either, for there are two Major League clubs drawing fans in Chicago. Texas, California, Kansas and maybe Minnesota City also appear likely to be in the flag chase for quite awhile. Whether Oakland can stay in it is a good question. t SEATTLE IS improved but the experts still dont consider the Mariners, White Sox or As contenders. The As are seeking to confound the odds, and so are the Sox. It makes for a very American West race. IT COULD be equally as interesting as the American East race with its blue ribbon franchises. |
