Then, we realized that really the only thing that could mess us up would be if we got too afraid because we were afraid. It turned out beautifully, and Im absolutely positive that you wont be able to tell what was shot before the strike and what was shot two and a half months later. I walked out a door in June and came in on the other side of the door in October, and you cant even tell. After many months away from TV, Kate Jackson is really coming out during the in fact, month of February she's in two network movies with air dates within four days of each other, because she had also costarred with Perry King for last weeks ABC drama Inmates. As she tells it: "What happened was that ABC and CBS had a little battle to see which one was going to get which show on first. Its really flattering; they (CBS) werent going to put Thin Ice on til May, then they heard that ABC was going to rush Inmates up and get it ready for February. Thin Ice clearly means more to Jackson, since she feels it provides her most challenging and satisfying dramatic part to date. Its the first work that I have truly, honestly been THIS proud of, proud of really, in my life. Its just good work. Given those feelings, it's not hard to predict that Kate Jackson will most certainly be seen in other roles in the near future and ones she can say shes as proud of as Thin Ice. maintain By JAY BOBBIN CBS. Actually, Kate Jackson is out to prove that her acting ability encompasses much more than the popular detective series allowed her to show. Her most determined attempt to do just that is Thin Ice, a made-for-Tdrama to be presented by O 'm FOCUS its a relationship piece, Jackson explains. It's about a high school teacher whos been widowed. She lives with her grandmother. Then, she and one of her senior students (played by Gerard Prender-gast- ) fall in love. "Its based on the true story of a couple who live, I think, somewhere in upstate New York. Theyve now been married for five or six years. Hes out of college and theyre very happy. Some of the incidents which are in the film are, of course, made up, but some are things that really happened to like the harassment them that the teacher went through. Its a lovely love story; Im so proud of it. Kate Jackson received a big bonus by appearing in Thin Ice the opportunity to work with screen legend Lillian Gish, who portrays the grandmother in the story. Miss Jackson made sure she was fully informed about her costar before beginning work on the film: I read up on the movies that D.W. Griffith made and Lillian and Dorothy (her sister) everything that I could read about her so that I could talk to her intelligently and really get the benefit of all the stories that she had and all the things that she could tell me. She has got the most energy and the best sense of humor. It was almost 10 years to the day that she spoke to my class at the American Acade-Ha- rt my of Dramatic Arts, and here we were working togeth-starre- d er; it was just magic. Jack-Th- e son now rates Miss Gish right up there with her longtime idol, Katharine Hepburn. Last weeks A Gun in the House on CBS was the latest of seven dramatic movies for TV that she has done, and Struthers has much to say about the two acting forms. If someone made me decide on one for the rest of my life. Id say comedy, simply because I get great joy out of making people laugh. I think I get to use more of my ability as a performer with comedy. Even though producers praise her dramatic abilities in films, they keep her in comedy when it comes to a weekly TV series. The new service, called the Public Subscriber Network, is projected to begin in 1983 and would be based on a partnership between public television stations and the nation's major cultural institutions. At night, the new network will offer a single major performing arts or cultural feature presentation, with surrounding short subjects. During the day, the network would provide secondary school, higher education and adult courses, master classes, skills classes, professional enrichment courses and management courses. While the evening programming would be supported by family subscribers primarily, the daytime programming would be supported by instituschool tional subscribers districts, colleges, universities, corporations, etc. But families would also have access to these services.
