Show 4 I DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER, SOUTH DAVIS ADVERTISER, APRIL 1, 1981 SIP tea Hoggs KH By DAVE WIGHAM l , ST. GEORGE With a new coach and very little experience, the Layton baseball team was an unknown power heading into the Sunshine tournament here last week, but the Lancers left their mark on the tournament. THE SCRAPPY Lancers started out in the four day affair with a 3 win over 4-- Payson. They then dropped a 6 decision to Springville but then bounced back the final to day to knock off Jordan claim third place in this event. Brad Hawkins has moved over to the Layton school after being the assistant baseball coach under Phil Olsen at Bountiful for several years. With Brad coaching them that program will take off and the Layton side will be tough down the line, noted Coach Olsen. 7-- 9-- 3 WITH THE weather situation the way it is each year, the Layton school is lucky to get in their varisty games during the season, so the junior varsity sees almost no action. The majority of players are up from the JV squad and have very little game experience. Layton scored in their first at bat during the tournament with Jeff Pearce getting a single followed by Alan Gentrys triple, which drove in Pearce. Gentry is a pleasant surprise for the coaches, he moved to Layton from Las Vegas and is a great outfielder and can hit. Brian Murray then worked his way for a base on balls and the Lancers pulled off the double steal with Gentry scoring. THEY ADDED another run in the second inning with Ken Kartright, who had singled, came home on sophomore Kenny Heaths single. They scored their final run, and the winner, in the fifth. Pearce started it off with a double, Gentry walked and Lance Brightshue reached first on an error thus loading the bases. Brian Murray then lofted a long fly ball to right which enabled Pearce to tag up and score from third. Mark Wood- - 0 a Sq.Fl Work Is Guaranteed 376-838- walked again, and Murray doubled home two more runs. THE FINAL runs came in the fourth. Pearce doubled, Gentry drove him in with a single and Murray doubled to score Gentry. Sophomore Brad Merrill went four innings and senior Todd Vought pitched the final one to preserve the win. As their own coach said, they get better each game they play. Theyll be ready for league action. BEN LOMOND defeated Clearfield first, 4 and then Woods Cross belted the Falcons, 8-- 7 ONE PROBLEM I noticed right off the bat was the name of the thing. Everything but the sun was in the city for the first couple of days. Finally, on Saturday afternoon, the final day of the tournament, Mr. Sun decided to show up. Guess he got his dates mixed up. The reason I made the journey was to cover the three local sides that made the trek. Bountiful, Davis and Layton all made the tournament and they showed those folks that little old Davis County can play baseball with the best of them. 9-- 3. COMING SOON! High with their Pittsburg style although as Coach Hawkins noted, "the L should be white. BEST LOOKING hats that didnt match: No contest here. Bountiful walks away with this one. A grand total of six different hats were on the field at the same time. Seems some sporting good store hasn't delivered the hats yet. Best uniform: Davis w ins here. The Darts had more sets than most major league sides, but no matter which set they wore they looked good. BEST BOX Elder spinner: That's a certain pitch taught by a former pitching great. Bountiful had a couple who showed promise with it but Jason Elg wins easily. Easiest to make friends with: This was tough, a lot of folks were real friendly but the one that stands out in the crowd is Luther from Davis High. This guy w as easy to get to know. Hed walk right up to you on all fours and lick ya. without a proper introduction even. LONG BALL hitters: goes to Davis High as three of their players stroked homeruns. Lance Hill, Brent Hatch and Jeff Roller. Best looking hats that matched: Layton Fm THE DARTS wasted no time in settling the fight with the Carbon folks as they jumped all over the Dino pitching staff. Carl Martinez opened up the game with a single and then John Svede gave a clinic in the hit and run department. Both runners scored on a passed ball. The Darts picked up another run in the third with Svede getting a single and then Stan Olsen driving him in with another single. ll 479-494- 9. -- SR'JiiiB THEY RUSHED his to the local medical facility where they treated him for a depressed fracture of the cheek. Now, all of us that know Phil, also know that his nose isnt the littlest thing in the world and at first glance the nurse thought that it was broken. Poor Phil, in all his pain, had to sit there and fake this from some nurse. He politely informed her that his nose was fine and that it was his cheek that was broken and hurting. ANYWAY, THEY arranged for Phil to have the cheek operated on this week here in Bountiful. At this writing he is in the hospital recovering from surgery. I hope all went well for him. Another factor, noticeable during this tournament, was the following: Bountiful had a large crowd with them. This tournament seems to be an annual ritual at the school. Many Davis fans also showed up in this fair city and Layton had their share although not as big as the other two. But with Laytons program on the upswing theyll bring even more next year. teams. Each side is requested to bring one, and Ron Ballantyne, Wayne Baker and Phil Leonard all worked the championship games which is a good indication of their ability. These three worked overtime doing any game they could, and they were three of the best. The event started off on a bad note, though, as Bountiful Coach Phil Olsen took a shot to the left cheek of his face while Region One Baseball fJews pre-seas- Chemical Dry Cleaning Ph. THIS GAME was a mismatch from the opening pitch as the Layton side jumped all over the Beetdiggers. In the first inning they picked up a couple of runs. Mike Moss walked; Jeff Pearce singled and Lance Brightshue walked to load the bases. Brian Murray then singled in two runs. In the second, the Lancers with put the game five runs. Kenny Heath, the fine sophomore catcher, singled, Mike Bunting drew a walk and Mike Moss reached first on an error. Pearce then doubled home two runs, Gentry singled in another, Brighshue week by traveling to Bonneville and hosting Sky View. Two defeats have left some wondering about their chances, but Coach Ken Hicks knows the season is still very young. Wet grounds played havoc with the scheduling and the guessing game as to starting time was on. WAS ON. At one point Bountiful started a game at S p.m. on Friday. Darkness crept in and the game was stopped at 7 p.m. Then at different times the Braves were to play at 8 p.m. that night, no wait a minute they'll play at 10 p.m. Hold it, the other game will be going on at that time, let's play at 11:30 p.m. after all the games. Guess when they played? They got the final two innings underway at noon on Saturday, right before the championship game. pitching batting practice. Coach Hawkins was philos-phicafter his loss to Springville, We played well but errors in the field hurt us in the long run. Throwing mistakes gave them four unearned runs. These kids have little game experience though, they are getting better. ALAN GENTRY and Joey Castillo were the big bats in the loss with Joey getting two doubles and two runs batted in while Alan got a couple of hits and also a couple of RBI's. Lance Brightshue had a RBI single. The Lancers then showed their true courage when they bounced back from that heartbreaking loss to Springville in the semifinals to bury Jordan By DAVE WIGHAM Hatch drove in Fields with his second double of the game. Jeff Roller ended the scoring, driving in Hatch with a single. SCOTT FIELDS went the distance in this game picking up the win, he allowed only six hits while striking out seven and walking just four. However, the comeback fell short when the runner at first was called out on a close pickoff play.
