Show I WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, DECEMBER 17, 1981 REFLEX-OA- VIS 1981 NORTH DAVIS LEADER. DECEMBER 17. et For Play In Weber High Tournament By KEITH DUNCAN (VjM fir, accomplished. KAYSVILLE After carving out a 7 win over his Davis Darts, Mike Gardner preferred to call 2 the Layton Lancers the best Lancer team Ive seen in a few years. DOUG WEHRLI led all of the Darts with 16 points while Brian Taylor added 13. Both Troy Anderson and Kris Kottrell were also in double figures with ten points each. Davis will take on the Lakers in the new Weber High gymnasium which was completed just before the new school year began. 72-6- 81-8- WE TRY to play them every but this they are sporting a team that looks like they are going somewhere, said the veteran Dart mentor. The Darts, with only one victory under their belts, were to battle Box Elder on Wednesday and then prepare for the annual Weber County Basketball Invitational at Weber High School. pre-seas- pre-seas- GARDNER IS confident that the Lakers are one of the top basketball teams in the state. They have three players that are taller than any of the players on the Dart roster. One of the better players of the bunch has to be 66 Brian Moore who is only a junior. Also, on the Laker roster, is 63 Shane Gardner, a cousin to the head Davis High coach. 4-- A DAVIS IS scheduled to open with Bonneville on Friday night at 6 p.m. The other contest pits the host Weber High team against Logan High. An area that Coach Gardner hopes his Darts can continue to improve in, is balanced scoring. Against Layton, and despite the loss, that is what the Darts IN ADDITION to all of that the Lakers are also led by two lightening quick guards that seem to be able to create plenty of problems for the opposition. By DAVE WIGHAM THE JAZZ make more personal appearances than any other organization I can think of. Just ask one of the players wives and theyll tell you how much they are gone. They dont have to do this but they want to be a part of the community. Laura has sent them to such places as high schools, junior highs, church groups, scout groups, shopping malls, grand openings for anything, community centers, PTA groups and anything else you can think of. Now that the Utah Jazz has made the first move to get the franchise going in the right direction lets give them a chance. BY NAMING Frank Layden as the head coach the Jazz have given themselves a positive image in the press and public and we as the fans should at least givs them the courtesy of judging them on their own merits. Last week, the day of the coaching change, a Salt Lake City radio station held a two hour special in which the fans called up and voiced their opinions of both the coaching change and anything else they want to say about the Jazz. THE MAIN reason you never hear about it is the fact Laura doesnt make the announcement to TV or radio. In other words they dont toot their horns. As mentioned this is something the players dont have to do. In other cities the teams charge money for any appearance. In Philly for example, to have any member of the 76er team come to your group will set you back a quick $200. The word is, there you pay ; big bucks, or you see no player. SEVERAL THINGS came up in those conversations that I feel should be further discussed. First of all I for one would like to see the Utah Star comparison thing thrown out the window. Some cal-lenoted the Stars were well received in the com- ' munity,' by making appearances, and they couldnt understand why the people arent watching the Jazz. rs ' ' IT MIGHT be worth mentioning a couple of things. When Dolph Schayes was in town for three nights, his son Dan was scheduled to make an appearance. Youd think with his dad in town for such a short time Dan would try to get out of it. Well, he didnt, in fact, he took his dad with him. Feb. 27 is the next Saturday that the Jazz will be home in Salt Lake City. Again youd think theyd want to be with their wives and families, yet many of them will be making appearances. Ben Poquette has two that day. WELL FOR one thing the Stars werent that well supported at the box office. The year they won the ABA title the fans started to show up but prior to that the Jazz draw more than the Stars ever did. Most fans simply recall the picture of Zelmo Beaty being held above the crowd at a jam packed Salt Palace. Remember that was after the championship game and this reporter has to think that on the day the Jazz win the NBA title that place will be full again. As for the second part, about the players on the Stars' making more personal appearances than the Jazz, anyone who makes that note simply doesn't make the facts. DONT EVER compare the Stars to the Jazz. The Jazz have them by a long way. 1 can remember as a youngster waiting for autographs of those guys after a game and they'd walk right by a bunch of us as if we didnt exist. Judge the Jazz by their own merits, let the Stars die. If you want a Jazz player for your group, call Laura at the Jazz office and shell make the arrangements. THE PERSON in charge of scheduling the players for appearances is Laura Herlovich and youd be hard pressed to find a better person for the job than her. Laura is first class all the way. Always friendly and joyful, face it she loves her work. She treats everyone the same, so if your group wants to have a player visit them call her at the Jazz office. As I recall, whenever the Stars sent a player out for an appearance they ran publicity through every part of the media possible. In other words they 4&k ' Coach Ann Avondet stands next to lice of her Dai is Dai t varsity basketball players. Besides the regular starting five, other varsity placers include Jodi Gardner. Gwen Greenhalgh, Carnta Simiin, Allison Morslev, I amine Duke, Taura Billy, Ixtri Jorgensen, Sonya Reese, Cheii Baxter and Angie Norris.
