Many fear their child will be upset by the experience. Unfortunately, this attitude often means that the dentist first sees the child when a toothache occurs. THE BEST time to bring the child to the dentist is before problems arise. This way, the first visit can be a pleasant experience. It is important that the parent present the dental visit to offer a reward for good behavior; don't say things like If you're good the dentist won't hurt you." All of these things indirectly tell the child to expect pain. MOST dentists agree that the child should be seen by a dentist at about age three. At this point the child's set of first teeth is complete. Usually, there hasn't been a chance for many cavities to form. Also, the child hasn't yet heard any scare stories from his peers.
