The sport of wrestling is pretty special to Tennis, who claims at one point in his life he had to decide between smoking and drinking and the sport of An innocent comment about jello legs started Pat Sawley on a program to better physical conditioning. Keith Duncan Reflex Span FARMINGTON Fat Sawley of Davis County, may have proven over the past couple of years that .Weightlifting for women may be a good thing, so long as it doesn't become a total obsession. PAT, THE wife of Davis High's head football coach. Ward Sawley, says she has found some results from weightlifting that she and other women like her would not have found elsewhere. It's been a gradual growth even to say that less than three years ago she would have never thought of competing in weightlifting. But one thing led to another and late last month Pat succeeded in placing first in Utah in mixed pairs competition and fourth in the overall among Utahs women bodybuilders. THE INTEREST is increasing dramatically, said Pat. "We've gone from only four women competing to over 20 in the past couple of years. But aside from all the competition, the trophies and everything else, women are finding they get some real results from weightlifting. "The first thing many women associate weightlifting with is big huge muscles on men, and they have no desire to look like that. But women can't build muscles like men because they do not have the hormone structure like men do. They are totally incapable of doing it. ANOTHER THING to realize is that men bodybuilders spend two to three hours a day, year after year to get their size. I have worked out two hours a day, six days a week and Ive lost three inches off my thighs. Ive taken weight off rather than built it up, although I have definitely firmed up." Mrs. Sawley, who works out at the Town and Country Racquet Club in Woods Cross, remembers one day when a woman walked into the club desirous of doing something about her overweight condition. When she was introduced to the weightroom she picked up a weight and immediately said she wouldn't have anything to do with that, thinking she might become bigger than she already was. IT'S MY belief that women can do 30,000 leg exercises and it wont do them much good. Any exercises is going to do some good, but compared to lifting weights, its just a waste of time. I know its hard work, but there is a certain place in it for both men and women, Pat stated. Pat, the mother of a son, admitted she was afraid to lift in the beginning for fear it might hurt her back, but said as she started weightlifting, I slowly did a few things for my back and found that my back wasnt bad, it only needed to be strengthened, she said. PATS START in bodybuilding was very innocent in the beginning. She was unhappy with the way she felt about herself and one evening after her son, Jason, made a comment jokingly that her legs looked like "Jello floating back and forth she decided it was time to make a move. She began a running continued wrestling. THE SPORT kept me in high school. I was a terrible student. 1 had to quit smoking and drinking to wrestle. It was my salvation in high school. he said. He wrestled at a very prominent wrestling school in Oklahoma. His sophomore and junior years he bounced from 167 to 145, back to 167. Come his senior year, Scott made his move and posted a solid 25-- 5 record. He beat two defending state champions in the process, won the state tournament himself and placed second in the regionals. HIS ONLY ambition after high school was to continue to live on the mat in college. It just happened that Marv Hess from the University of Utah came to matches. AFTER ALL that running, racquetball and tennis, nothing was firming me up. So I asked my husband for help. After that I followed him to the gym one day and started to lift a few weights. Within three weeks I was seeing some results. I began buying and reading every book I could find on bodybuilding, mainly because I wanted to find what was going to be good for me. "After three months of it I was finding myself pretty involved and the results were more evident. I increased my workouts and began putting more sets in until now Ive established an organized system which allows different parts of the body a chance to recover. HER CHANCE for that something else came one day while she was in the LA Airport. Vince Cotton, Mr. Utah 1981, happened to be close by and asked Pat if she was a bodybuilder and if so would she like to compete. Her first reaction was negative, but Vince talked her into getting ready for the state competition just four weeks away. Half of the battle to get ready was already behind her, mainly because she was in tremendous shape. Her body fat stood in the 4 percent area. By way of contrast to the average woman, Pat made it appear ridiculous. Some women have about 22 percent body fat with the average being about 36 percent. 4-- 3-- ABOUT THE only thing I had to get ready in was routines. It was new to me, the only time I had seen it was on TV. Tim Sandle was the person responsible for helping me get ready. He offered a great deal of help and has been a big part of my success. The two went to work and it wasnt long before Pat had the three areas to be judged down pat. They are semintry, muscularity and posing. Pat did well in the competition last year as she placed second overall which included a first in the muscularity division. She also placed second in the mixed pairs. in posing I WORK Monday and Thursday on my chest and back; Tuesday and Friday on my shoulders, biceps and forearms; Wednesday and Saturday on my legs. The calves get a workout everyday. Each workout takes about two hours with a 30 minute aerobics routine added to that. Pat admits she has a knack for competing, whether it be in tennis, racquetball or softball. After putting so much effort into bodybuilding she began asking herself the question, Were am I going with all this? She had firmed up like she wanted, but now she wanted something more. all-st- ar airport, on a motorcycle. On the way back, Hess offered Tennis a scholarship providing he could get himself to Utah. "I remember taking the ACT test and again keeping in mind that I wasnt a student to be proud of. I qualified with the lowest score you could receive and still pass, said Tennis. AT UTAH, Scott felt his way around his freshman year and came away with a winning record. As a sophomroe he became a solid member of the team while posting an 7 record, placing second at 167 in the WAC and contending in the nationals. The junior year was great also with an impressive winning record, another second in the WAC and a 1 record in ntionals. I CHOKED my senior year, said Scott, I should have won the WAC title but took second for the third straight year. He finished with a record and again was 1 in the nationals. With wrestling over. Tennis turned to boxing and a year out of college won the state heavyweight title in Golden Glove boxing. As a 175 pounder he beat up a 212 pounder to win it.
