ALTHOUGH HE enjoyed the comradeship and team dedication he found in sports, he said he never really did it that well, but he is enthusiastic about the accomplishments of his sister, Mary Jo Peppier. She is now a volleyball coach in Kentucky, and she brought a national championship to Utah State University while she was coaching there, he said. She was named the most valuable volleyball player in world games in Bulgaria a few years ago, and later became a professional volleyball player. She is really dedicated to volleyball and to the advancement of womens sports and has worked toward achieving recognition for them as athletes and for their role in society. Mr. Peppier graduated from BYU with his bachelor's degree in business management. He attained his masters degree in business administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco in 1972. He began his retailing career as a management trainee for Sears and later worked for Foxmoor Casuals, a junior apparel store, before coming to work for Meryears ago. vyn's eight and one-ha- lf 45 wide Priced elsewhere to $ 8.98 yd. 100 Percent Polyester 1 49 lb. He will be undergoing his fourth surgical operation on the knee right away at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he will receive a ligament transplant. He will be away from his job for approximately two months. bolts WE LIKE TO cluster stores, Mr. Peppier explained, and our company has the opening of stores down to a fine science. We moved in 27 trailers full of merchandise hen we opened the Layton store and had it unloaded and in CONFERENCE telephone call for store directoms made each Thursday to insure that each store has enough of the sales items. A shuttle van between stores shifts merchandise to compensate for shortages. We have a really good comradery among store directors, Mr. Peppier said. We are proud of our stores in Utah as a group, and we think we have the highest standards, the best merchandise, the best looking stores and the best control of our paper work. We really work together and help each other out. IF ONE OF us gets a good idea, it is shared with the others. Middle-AmeriMervyns is a chain that offers ulititarian merchandise in a medium-price- d range. Probably the very affluent people would not shop here, but we hope that everyone else does. For our domestic goods, we have to plan six months ahead. For imports, the time period is nine months. Right now, buyers are almost through making next summer's purchases. He tries to spend 60 to 70 percent of his time on the sales floor. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, I walk through every department in the store and talk with our sales people to see how we can do a better job, he said. I have training sessions with department managers every Monday afternoon and a business meeting each Tuesday morning to talk about policies, procedures and things to be done. THE STORE presently employs 130 persons, most of them part time, and will employ another 75 sales people in to prepare for Christmas business. It was started in 1949 by a man named Mervin Morris, who hired a sign painter to paint a sign for his 2,800 square foot store. The painter substituted a Y for the I in the mans first name, because he said it looked more pleasing, and Mervyns was born. Now, that first store occupies 125,000 square feet and covers nearly a city block, and the Mervyn's chain has expanded to 88 stores in the Western United States. We opened 13 stores this year and are scheduled to open 15 in 1983, Mr. Peppier said. We have stores in California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. WE ARE THE first regional department store in the United States to achieve $1 billion in sales, which we reached last year. Our own store at the Layton Hills Mall is up 28 percent in sales in the first six months of 1982, over a similar period last year. He said Mervyns opened four stores in Utah on the day the Layton store opened, July 25, 1980. The three others were at the Brickyard, Family Center at 72nd South in Salt Lake and the Valley Fair store. But that record will be surpassed next year, when five stores in Dallas will open the same day. ODDS AND ENDS TABLE THE LAYTON STORE contains 90.000 square feet, but the average Mervyns has between 75,000 and 80.000 square feet. The buyers for Mervyns are getting a lot better at meeting the specific needs of Utah stores, Mr. Peppier said. place within ten days. I was conducting personnel interviews in the dusty shell of the store before we were ready to open, trying to explain to prospective employees what Mervyn's was. Some 5.2 million color tabloids featuring merchandise on sale are printed each week for the Mervyn's chain, and store directors make sure they have sufficient merchandise to cover sales during the week. 01 Fabric AH CHUCK PEPPLER b. bags mgg ea.
