By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports What might have been, never was! GIRLS BASEKTBALL at Clearfield, Davis and Layton certainly hadnt taken a backseat to anyone through the respective league seasons in Region One and Region Four, but the showing in the 1983 state tournament for these three schools didnt turn out to be so glossy. For Layton and Davis, there was some consolation in finishing among the states top eight in but the dreams of nesting in a state championship are forever gone. 4-- LAYTON OBTAINED the finest finish among the area county schools by claiming their third straight win over the Roy Royals in the consolation finals on Saturday. That gave Brent Checketts and his champs, a sixth play finish and a trophy to bring home. Davis was the only team in north Davis Avon-det- s County to win the first night. But Ann crew lost the next night to Hillcrest, won the next evening against Cottonwood and had to settle for seventh place after Alta defeated them on Saturday, MARGO JONES may not be her happiest, but the veteran Clearfield coach was still fairly While Clearfield was scrambling for loose balls all through the tournament. Layton High they couldnt quite oust Highland in the running for the region title, the 17-- 7 overall record shows the girls knew how to win and at times how to win very big. Two of those big wins came in the tournament including the opening night victory over Granger, a 4 trounce. The other was the 1 rocking of Cottonwood that sent Davis into the last day of action. 64-3- 50-3- FOR THE consolation victory, the Lady Lancers were able to hold Roys talented Niki Nye to only five points. Thats what I call defense, said Checketts about his girls efforts. - The story with the women in LAYTON state tournament play was much the same as it was with the men. Both teams fell to Brighton teams in the opening round and both Brighton teams played exceptional in their first tournament games. In fact those who were close to the Bengal womens squad say theyd never seen Brighton have a game like they had in the first round against Checketts crew. THE DARTS WERE paced in the tournament by strong performances from Diana Peterson (had 14 points in the opening night win over Granger), Teri Hartley (had 16 points in the win over Cottonwood), Tracie Belt (high point person in the loss against Alta with 13), Cheri Baxter and Gwen Greenhalgh. THE 42-2- 9 win over Roy on Saturday evening was sparked also by offensive punch of Melba Tyson, Angee Gibby, Kim Meyers and Julie Nelson. Layton ended the season with a fine overall record of 16-- -- 8. AND JUST like the boys, the girls came back Davis High to win their next three games and claim this years consolation championship. The Lady Lancers had to beat Roy for the third straight time this year to pull it all off. Everything Brighton tossed up, went in, said Checketts in review of the first nights action. But in review of more positive things, Checketts said his girls play their hearts out on defense the remainder of the tournament. THE RESULTS were indicative of Laytons Clearfield High- - A hot shooting Alta squad KAYSVILLE raced past Davis in the quest for fourth and seventh place in the 83 tournament last Saturday and the Darts had to settle for seventh with the loss. CLEARFIELD - The Falcons, who havent lost in the first round of state tournament action for quite some time, took it on the chin from West Jordan for the second time this year. The 2 loss moved the Falcons into consolation play where they beat Bountiful 1 but lost to Roy ALL IN ALL, the Lady Darts made an impressive showing through the year. The tournament was a brand new experience to many of the Falcon girls and of course it showed, even in their win over Bountiful. Im proud of the girls, said Margo Jones, Most people picked us to do no better than fourth in our league and these girls end up tying for the league title. MARGO, WHO has coached womens basketball at Clearfield for years, commented that 3 her gathering may have been the most balanced group of kids shed ever coached. Not just one girl could take things over, it had to be a team effort in order for us to win. I'd have to say that Elise Ipson was our catalyst, she being our main leader and captain. But we had to have good efforts from Jody (Sherrod), Mandy (Hennenberger), Raye Lynn (Hayes) and others in order to really get the job done, said the coach. 82-8- THERE ISNT a player I can underestimate. Even Corrie Vigil, Sue Burton and Alisa Garcia have come in when we needed them, and theyve got the job done, said Jones. So with a combination of mental mistakes by younger players, the Falcons werent able to put together the kind of tournament theyve been known for in the past. ALL NEW Senior League players must attend the tryouts to be held Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fisher Park Diamond E.
