THE 3 1CTORY propels Davis into the 1983 playoff where they'U match up with cither Brighton or Bingham in the Tint round. That game it scheduled to be in town this Saturday afternoon. Mark Miller and Dave Kinard. Hammer finally penetrated the end zone w ith 2:25 remining in the first quarter on a drive. James Warden's PAT kick proved good. HIGHLAND, who happens to be the only club that has beaten the Darts in Region Four play since the present alignment was formed, took advantage of good field position midway through the second quarter before sending their kicker in to net a field goal and make it tletc The five characters gave Region Tour opponents pure headaches in '83. BUT FOR THE players and coaches, the victory goes even a little deeper in meaning and there are several reasons why. One was the fact the club remained undefeated at 9-- the first time any Davis team has done that since 1965. Another was the fact that Davis' sophomore, junior varsity and of course the varsity, never lost a single game all year. It might be difficult to research the books if that kind of feat had ever been accomplished, but in '83 it goes down for sure. wouldn't be anything less,' said Kilgrow. For kicker James Warden, the victory was sweet in that it was a Highland player last season that crashed into him and caused an iryury that prevented him from seeing playoff action. Feels good to beat em," said Warden. James added a couple of PATs last Thursday. 0, AS ONE OF the referees of last Thursdays title game was walking back to the lockerroom, he stated aloud, What a class program. I wouldnt mind doing Davis games every week of the year. . Needless to say, the Davis players were quite excited about some of the things mentioned. Quite a few of them had some short comments to say about the season and the game. STUDENTBODY president and talented lineman, Sean Kilgrow, remembers all too well that last year when his Davis teammates entered the playoffs, he had to sit out with a cast on his leg due to serious problems with his knee. But this time hell be fighting with the rest of them. "You know, I really cant wait for the playoffs. It means quite a bit to me and thats why we wanted to beat Highland so bad, so the sweetness of getting into the playoffs AGGRESSIVE Jeff Sampson commented, the I did some pretty intense week before Highalnd, mainly because I felt I got beat pretty bad in the Vicwmont game. Its our last shot to win it all." Kurt Cottrell stated, It was great and beautiful, what else can I say. The Davis center completed a nine game set in which he had started every game and really wasnt supposed to before the season began. CHRIS STEVENSON, the tough senior linebacker stated, On defense we were all assigned a different guy to block or tackle and nearly all night it worked like it was supposed to. Chris was another who missed last years playoffs because of an injury, but not this year. Jeff Hammer, the bullish fullback, said, They came to hit us hard, but we hit em just as hard. Its do or die from here on out. JIMMY LARKINS, another senior lineman added, Its the funnest year many of us have ever had in football. Tonights win just keeps us rolling into the playoffs. Its a childhood dream of ours to go on from here and win the state championship. Mike Woodward, one of the smallest guys on the team but one of the most aggressive, saiJ, It's one game at a time, either Brighton or Bingham are next." MARK MILLER paused for a moment and can you believe it? In a way, it's like said. a dream." 9-- 7-- 3. The Rams, who Ward Sawley later admitted, are the best club we've faced so far," came close to nailing another just before halftime had it not been for Sampson and Rick Francis sacking the Ram quarterback and taking the kicker out of his normal range. The Rams found some success going through the air in the final seconds, but it was all too late as the Darts under Saw leys direction won their fifth region title in a row and helped secure Saw leys 40ih victory as a head ' coach in five years. SAWLEY WAS hoisted on the shoulders of his players and carried away to the victors lockerroom. jvr-tan- 3 j let-do- 1 0 Senior lineman Greg McNabb said, Our team has the philosophy that the score is 0 at half, no matter what it really is. We simply go out the second half and get the job done every-tim- e. We have to work hjrd for Coach Sawley because he works hard for us. 0-- AND ANOTHER thing, its sure nice to have No. 22 (Ryan Smith) running the ball again." And Smith had these comments, Its my favorite thing to run the ball for em. I just run as hard as 1 can because I love my teammates. Darts, Lancers Enter Playoffs It's a do or die for both Davis and Layton from here on out. Both have qualified for the n 1983 playoffs. THE DARTS will play home this Saturday afternoon against the winner of the Brighton-Binghawinner while the Lancers will travel Titans on to Olympus to take on the Friday at 3 p.m. Ward Sawley says his team got a tough draw the opening tound, claiming that either Brighton or Bingham are very capable of beating anyone in state. Brighton proved that last week by beating Alta, one of the top clubs. The Bengals are the defending state champions and were considered by many to repeat as state champions. "It doesnt matter wholl be our opponent, because both of them are tough teams, said Sawley. LAYTON DESTROYED Weber last week 47-- 3 and many feel that if Layton can play as well as they did against Weber, they might have a chance of knocking off the heavily favored Titans. 4-- A inter-regio- m SENIOR QB, Steve Sargent says, Ever since we were freshmen, weve had the goal of winning the state championship. The more we talk about it in our team meetings, the more intense it gets. Were just like a great big happy family with the coaches as our dads. RODDY Meacham stated, Its been a season that Ive learned more about football than I ever thought I would. Would like to congratulate Highland on a tough game, they are the'toughest that weve faced yet. AND FINALLY it was Dave Kinard who spoke Compared to last week against View-mon- t, it was an entirely different story. This time we played our kind of football. top-rank- Senior Jeff Sampson prepares for upcoming playoff game. Good Friends Mw Nothing Haring Big Success! KAYSVILLE - As the final seconds ticked 22-- 9 victory over off in the emotion-packe- d Highland, every Davis coach crowded around their leader. Ward Sawley, and recognized the moment as both beautiful and -- hard-to-forg- THE VICTORY over the Rams enabled the Darts to capture their third consecutive Region Four championship and continue to remain the shared one only school, outside Bountiful who this regions football title with them, to win crown. It was also the fifth consecutive region championship that has been brought to the school under the tenure of Sawley and the staff he now has. It was the same staff that started with him back in 1979, nothing has changed. . YOU COULD SEE how the players felt about their coach as they picked him up and carried him off the field. It was Sawleys 40th win as a head coach against only 1 1 losses. The win also boosted his 14-updated record in Region Four play to SUCCESS IS A funny thing, said Sawley a 1. few days after the game. It can enable you to demand more from yourself and the players in terms of more hours at practice and that type of thing. Fortunately for us, weve been on that kind of high for the past couple of years. The kids bounced back and executed almost perfectly against Highland. Again as before, it was preparation that was the key. BUT WHAT comes next? The playoffs of course and 16 clubs trying to reach the majestic pinacle of a state championship. Sawley isnt bashful either, in letting the public know that hed like to win it all. Were looking for the state title again, just like every other head coach is who has never won one or who has. Were pushing for that thing that says your team is the best. Even though in my eyes, I know that this team and others before them were the best in my eyes, its nice to have everyone else thinking the same thing. Four games from now, well for sure know, he said. THE DARTS were preparing this week to meet with either Brighton or Bingham this coming Saturday in Kaysville. Sawleys assistants also had a few choice things to say about last weeks feat. Jim Dickson was one of them. He started by saying, It seems like were getting into the Dallas philosophy of bend but dont break. Highland came to play and proved to be the best club wed faced all year. It was just a good ole fashioned football game, he said. THIS IS DICKSONS sixth year at Davis, having started Jay Cullimores final year. From his first days as a Davis assistant, Jims had goals and aspirations to become a head coach or perhaps excell into the college ranks as a coach. But the success with great friends at Davis has changed that a bit. I could probably Sawley is a stay here forever and probably have as much responsibility as some head coaches have. I could do it despite some important goals that Id set for myself. Maybe working with people you can get along with and having tremendous success at the same time is what really counts. WEVE NOT ONLY had fun winning y. around here, but the friendship is something that has multipled with each day. Bruce Bitner, another assistant said, To have three bodies of football players, the varsity, the JV and the sophomores go undefeated in one year is an amazing feat. KIDS AROUND here know what football is all about. The linemen know what to block and the runners know which holes to find. Then on defense those kids just get the ball back and they do it all over agian. Its 59 kids in a big family with a bunch of funny fathers running around leading them. Mike Gardner commented too, saying The feeling after a win like this one is incredible. IM PROUD TO be a part of a staff where the coaches are the very best friends I have. And its nice too when friends are having success together. This is Coach Sawleys day. THEN TOO, the kids deserved it. They set a goal to win the region and they were not to be denied. But its time now to get back down to earth and achieve some of the othei goals weve got in mind. With a little luck an f the kids continue to play as well as they have, well make it. AS SAWLEY addressed his team after the game, one of his opening comments were, Sometimes I feel like a bachelor, Pat never sees me. But if hard work produces these kinds of results, then it makes it a little more worthwhile. Later Pat was asked if it was worth it, she being a former coach herself. Probably wouldnt be worth it, if Ward were to do this the rest of his life. But he and I are very goal oriented people, so while hes in this thing 1 want him to do a good job and never look back on it with any regrets, she stated. i |
