Show JANUARY 4, 1984 Good Time Was Had By All, Now Warfare Begins Bonneville, Roy Tradition Might Make A Difference night. - EXPECT MOONS team from Layton e it their all. Despite their frustrations in theyve never given in. A good example was their final practice game at Brighton, where Moons crew worked hard for pre-seaso- n, the entire game. The difference was Brighton and Layton shooting 23 percent. Like emphasized before, if the buckets go in, the Lancers will be competitive. shooting One characteristic of Region One this continued Moon, Is that every team will be relying upon the team concept. There aren t any Sie Moores or Reid Neweys to carry the load. year, Roy Royals The veteran Roy High coach, Ted Smith, sorta chuckled but was as serious as he could be in saying, I hope the league is balanced like people say it is, we might have a chance then. DURING THE Smith has had the chance to see most of his Region One competition in action and it just happens that the region teams he has seen were playing their finest of the year. An example was the night he traveled to Farmington Junior High to see Clearfield whip Davis. If they (the Falcons) play like that against us, well be lucky to stay within 20 points, Smith said. . The Roy coach says basketball is a tough game to predict, because any given team can beat any other team on any night. Such has in which been the case with Roys with a the squad went began They bang by nailing a good Highland team a defeat, and they nearly clipped a solid Provo team last weekend. But on the other hand, the Royals feel theyve lost some other games they n, pre-seas- 5-- 5. shouldnt have. IF WERE GOING to be successful this season, we must play as a team, said Smith, We just dont have one or two people that can dominate the scoring column. Well be counting on Mike Coe (a two-yestarter) to control our game, but the scoring will have to be spread out among some other people. Gary Calvert. Along with him, will be Jim Coleman on the guardline and the 6 center, Jeff Petty. THE TEAM that wins this thing, with a mark or not, will have to battle good win-losaid and work hard for that championship, Conolly. 7-- 3, Weber Warriors In Warriorland, Dick Connoly is now hoping with league a few days away, that his club can just prove they can win a ballgame. If they do succeed in doing that, the Warriors will prove that playing terribly though competition in preseason is the best answer to toughen you up for league. and WEBER DIDNT win in some to beat had some chances clubs, perhaps but without much question they played one of the most difficult practice game schedules of anyone in the region. Conolly feels that the top five clubs in the state are Brighton, Hillcrest, East, Bingham and Olympus, and he should know after having played three of them. But despite not winning a game, Weber has never lost by more than nine points in any one game. In basketball, you can beat yourself and perhaps thats what weve been doing at times. Im hoping very sincerely that were ready for Box Elder this Friday night, said Conolly. THE VETERAN Weber coach believes that most people would be right in selecting Clearfield, Bonneville, Box Elder and Roy to vie for the top spots in the region. Much of Webers strength in the following 60 days, will depend upon 5 senior forward, pre-seas- 6-- 7-- By DAVE WIGHAM 6-- Clipper Sports Bountiful has had as good a preseason, as anyone in the region and the Braves will certainly battle anyone in this years crop. The Braves have already shown they can play with the best in the state, they lost to undefeated and top ranked Olympus in overtime. Brent Bouvang leads the Braves in the middle with Troy Rawlings outside but the main thing about this club is the way they play good team ball, especially on defense. 7-- 3, WOODS CROSS has had the most rebuilding to do since London after the war. Gone are all the stars from the state team along with their coach. The Cats didnt have a great preseason, 8 but with some breaks they could have won more. Kevin VanUitert gives them height inside and junior Bryce Moore has been a big pleasant surprise to new coach Clyde Jackson. 2-- The fun and games are over for the basketball teams in Region Four as the league warfare opens up this Friday around the area. Preseason has come and gone for these six clubs and now they have to face each other a couple of times for the purpose of selecting the four clubs that will represent them in the state touma-men- t. ss Clearfield Falcons What better way to wipe out memories of a league record, than to come back the next year and carve yourself a spot in the state tournament, and maybe even win the region championship in the process? Craig Hansen . and his Clearfield crew have it in mind. THE FALCONS have a few things in their favor at present, things they didnt have a year ago. One of them is a solid bench that has players constantly coming off and who have performed just as well as the starters. Another is their toughness, seniors and juniors are all together, not two classes of people. Its these two things in fact, that might be a deciding factor in Clearfield turning things around this time. But even though Hansen and his followers are quite optimistic, Hansen at least knows about the 84 balance. For example, he defended Webers 8 mark by remarking, They are better, much better than what that record indicates. When those kids were juniors and sophomores, we bet em by one and two points. They are tough. WE OURSELVES have some spots where we need to get better. Our best basketball is yet to come and it will come, said the coach. Clearfield has a tough tandem at the guardg characters like Curline, some tis Cook and Jeff Parry. Parry incidently, is the clubs hub and everything will revolve around him. Hal Schofield has turned some lights on in the past and will be counted on heavily. The big people, like John Grotzky, Phil Peterson, Eric West and Steve Labato have all had their moments in games. THATS A big assignment when you consider the impact this league has had on the state the past two years. A year ago this league had the top three finishers in the state, then add to that the fact that their fourth team East won the consolation title. Two years ago from the region won the state title. Face the music folks the road to the state championship goes through Region Four. WHILE SEVERAL other leagues are being touted as the toughest in the state this season you can still count on Region Four for a league with a tight race and some top rated clubs. Here then is a look at each of the six clubs in the league, in no particular order although we will start with East since they are the team that the league coaches are pointing at as an early favorite. EAST IS a talented bunch. Theres no 1- HIGHLAND is the other Salt Lake entrant in this league and the Rams are still trying to find themselves. They were hit hard by graduation plus their top returning player moved out of state and the result has been a slow, 7 preseason start. 3-- , 0-- The one thing you can count on from the Rams is a press and that alone puts fear in most high school teams. Scott Grimm is back, for his third year as a starter, to lead the Rams in the middle. The Rams are always a threat to beat anyone and you can bet theyll have a say in the eventual championship. DAVIS IS in the league from up north and the Darts return more experience than anyone else in the league. The Darts always seem to delay the basketball season with a long football one and that has been the story thus far. The Darts n but that never concerns are 6 in veteran coach Mike Gardner. Once Ryan Smith, Jeff Sampson, Steve Sargent and Casey Lloyd get the football out of their systems the Darts will play on an even note with anyone. They even have some height this season but the tall ones are also the young ones. 4-- pre-seaso- Most people are saying that Vie wmont is still a year away but the Vikings dont want to wait that long. True the majority of players are juniors but they also have experience having played on last years club. The Vikes are 4 in as of this writing, and they are anxious to get into the state playoffs once again after a two year layoff. Brett Cloward is the main scoring machine but the Vikes thrive on their depth. 5-- n, EVERYONE wants predictions from the media so here are mine. No team will go through the league undefeated, there are just too many games and factors. Plus no team will go through region action without winning a game, its the only standard that any team can beat any other on a given night. I honestly feel that 2 will win the region and it will take a 4 mark to get into the state event. 8-- 6-- Thursday Is Dual Meet Day Mats Are Out sharp-shootin- Journal Sports The following week, Layton will host Clearfield in the featured dual of the year on Thursday. The moritorium is over and the mats are out again! DAVIS DARTS . By KEITH DUNCAN pre-seas- ar DAN SKINNER is doing a good job for us, this being his first year out. Theres been at least seven or eight kids that have done a good job at times. As a team though, we hope our rebounding will improve despite the fact we are not a big team. HOPEFULLY tradition will figure in on Roys chances, Smith hopes it does. Last seatied with Bonneville for son they finished the league crown. question that they have the best overall talent in the region admitted Bountiful coach Mike Hall. Thus far the Leopards have posted a 3 record in practice games which includes the title in the Holiday tournament for Salt Lake schools. Heading the pack is 69 Reid Monson who is supposedly being recruited by the likes of Kentucky and UCLA. Monson is good but he gets a lot of help from 69 Ed Peterson. One thing that East does is start a couple of sophomores including the younger brother of Utah State star Greg Grant. The Leopards look strong but they have neither been blown off the floor nor have they destroyed anyone. Bonneville Lakers WRESTLERS from all over the state are working and preparing for their teams first league dual meet of the season. Gary Alverson admits that if the folks coming off his bench can flex their muscles a little harder through the upcoming season, the Lakers could very well be one of the four clubs from this region making the playoffs. BONNEVILLE, WHICH went 3 in preseason, has six seniors on the club but Alverson starts two juniors. Those two juniors make up half the number of juniors on his team, a total of four. Alverson stated, Jeff Farrell, who was electrocuted would have really secured us up and would have been a really valuable player for us. Weve been forced to go clear to the sophomores before we get any help because Ive given my seniors and juniors their chance to help us off the bench. Things really depend upon how the first group can play. If we had a good bench. Id say we were right up there with Clearfield and Box Elder. CLEARFIELD FALCONS Clearfield opens its dual meet schedule in Region One with a meet in Pleasant View against the Weber Warriors. That takes place this Thursday night. 7-- THE FALCONS will be going most likely without the services of their star Wayne Estep, who suffered an injury in the Viewmont Invitational. Rick Herdt, however, is back and is continuing to progress. Then next week, Clearfield is on the road again to meet Layton in perhaps the top featured dual of the year for these two schools. This dual will take place Jan. 12 at Layton High. The traveling trophy, sponsored by J.P.s Texaco of Clearfield, will be the featured subject of the meet. BUT TRADITION means a lot and if anyone has it, itd have to be us and Roy and Clearfield was always right up there until last . year. Alverson commented on Layton, the fact they havent been playing well lately. Doug Moon lets his kids feel their way through then starts coaching them in league, he said. The Bonneville coach isnt taking them lightly, especially since they are the first club theyll meet in league play. ON JAN. 14th, Clearfield will once again THIS WEEKEND the Darts will be in the Davis defense of its dual meet crown begins this Thursday as the Darts travel to Bountiful line-u- p of the Brighton Classic in Sandy. Then next week the Darts wrestle Woods for a dual with the Braves. An interesting twist for the Darts will be the fact that both Shawn Cross at Woods Cross on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Green is trying to get down to 98 pounds while Robinson is heading for 105, the weight class in which he won the state title last season. Laytons dual meet schedule in Region One opens with the team favored to take the title, the Box Elder Bees. Layton hasnt lost a dual meet in this region for quite sometime, but that string may be in jeopardy on Thursday, Jan. 5. THE WINNER of this league will go 6--4 or said Alverson. Mike Watson and Dave Tesch have been the consistent players for Bonneville through the but Alverson says his club will only be as good as Gene Stark turns out to be, starter who was the second leadthe two-yethe club. Watson is a 6 center on scorer ing and Tesch is a 0 guard. HOUSEBREAKING YOUR PUPPY When the puppy awakens from his nap, you immediately lift him out of the box and carry him outside to a spot whicn has been previously selected and prepared. This is done by mopping up his first accident and anchoring the rag in the new spot. The puppy smells where he has been before, or thinks he has, and gets the idea immediately. Play always excites a puppy and makes him want to urinate. Always take him to his spot before and after play, always when awakens from a nap; and always the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night, and after every meal. You must never just put him out." Instead, you must take hin to his spot, urge him to go and compliment him when he does. Once outside, wait untd he does relieve himself before br urging him back into the house. There are times, of course, when he will make a mistake in the house. In those cases, scold him, and show him where he should have gone. If you have questions, ask your veterinarian, as your pets health depends on it. Brought to you at public service from: Marr O.
