Show WEEKLY REFLEX, DAVIS NEWS, JOURNAL, APRIL 25, 1984 Continued pgiimm Womens Track ; - By KEITH DUNCAN - Journal Sports ments won the 200 meters easily and set a new meet record of 26.38. She also was the 400 meters, very easily, setting a new meet record of 58.99 in the trials on Wednesday. She was also the anchor leg on both the winning sprint relay team and, the mile relay team. Clements knows that DeVries of East is still the name most people look for in womens track and field, but she claims she doesnt let that bother her in the least. "She's good in what she does and Im trying the best in what I do. CLEARFIELD . Baseball Confidence has a lot to do with said assistant coach, Ray Meibos, "Our seniors really want to win and its shoved off on our success, brings out a special breed of people the juniors. and nothing can make a baseball whiz happier than to do a lot of THOSE SENIORS include Jeff winning while loving his sport. Parry, Greg Folk, Phil Peterson, Dave Peterson and Troy Van YOU COULD probably classify Buren. Clearfields Ken Hicks and Ray "Baseball is such a game that it Meibos, the Falcons two coaches, requires so much of two kids, the as that special breed apart. pitcher and the catcher. That one chance to make a play is as ever important as what a this weeks action, stood with a 2 record and occupied first place in pitcher does through an entire Region One. Its been a few years game. SO WITHOUT enthusiasm and since weve seen a Falcon baseball team be in that position with just being ready to go, any baseball four games left in league. Perhaps team is going to be in trouble. I one more win would be enough to believe weve had the other seven at least qualify this team for a playguys ready to go, they love the off to get into the coveted state game and have been in the game," tournament. said Meibos. ! DURING PRACTICE sessions my workouts are designed to keep my arms pumping. Those practice sessions are what helped me get out of my blocks faster than what I was doing last year. Last year I 4-- could have counted to 10 faster than could have gotten out of the blocks." Clements feels the Clearfield girls have a chance of beating Weber in state, "We have a chance if coach puts us in the right events and if Sharon (Anderson comes through in the hurdles." 1 Perhaps one other reason Clearfield has been successful in winning four of their last five games, has been their confidence in their ability to hit the ball. Meibos, who has always prided himself in being a good hitter when he played as well as teaching hitting, stated, "I take pride in our hitting and I dont mind spending a lot of individual time helping kids on hitting. pared to fail as much as they are prepared to succeed. In those seven times why not hit the ball hard and be aggressive. I think one reason for our success has been a guy by the name of Jeff Parry. More than his pitching, hitting and fielding, we couldnt do without his leadership. He's just a leader, he makes the kids feel a part of things. TAKE FOR instance Mike Call who hasnt hit real well in recent games. And even though Mike and others have occasionally got hits, they are mature enough to realize that even though they may get a hit, they still aren't swinging the bat good. There is a difference. "So what does Mike do. He gets after it on the pitching machine until his hands are literally raw with blisters. Id never seen anything like it, at least with a high school kid. With a little more of that we'll be where we want to be. ITS A FACT of life in baseball, youre going to get out at least seven out of ten times. But in my mind its still important to be pre HES AN achiever. Hes now jumping the longjump in track because hed like to help them out and also earn his seventh letter. Its something his dad didn't do and he wants to, said Meibos. Even Hicks is noticing a big difference. We weren't making the defensive plays we had to make early in the year, but we are now. Weve kicked a few, but the basic plays weve made. IF WEVE got a pitcher throwing who knows that his teammates are behind him who are making good plays for him, then he starts throwing a ball a little better. It begins an accumulating effect, the better they get people out the bet ter he throws out on the mound. It sheds confidence both ways. : "Now weve got people carrying i their fair load." HICKS WAS proud of Call's effort to improve on his batting, enough to get his hand raw with blisters. "We just need more kids willing to spend some time like that," said Hicks. Parry continues to hit the ball hard for the Falcons as does Van Buren. "Troy and Jeff have made as much improvement at the bat as anyone. J eff has spent a number of hours working on the fundamentals and Van Buren's big worth has been his fielding. Hes really beginning to come through at second base," said Hicks. THIS WEEK the Falcons will play Bonneville on Tuesday and Weber this Friday. The game that was missed last week might be made up this week or the coaches could move it until the end of the schedule. "We'll plan around what the league is doing and try not to ' kill ourselves," said Hicks. ON THEIR way to a team victory, the Clearfield gals took firsts in every relay race. The sprint relay won with a time of 52.34, the medley relay squad set a new record of 4:36.22 and the mile relay also was victorious. The Clearfield women were also victorious, beating out Davis for top honors. : WERE GETTING better and better with each week. And thats what we needed, good game experience. "Were playing well together, even though Dave Lattin and Rick Youngberg are leading us in scoring. MAYBE ONE thing that will help us here late in the season, is our knowledge of what it will take to win late in the season. These kids have been there before. Pressure really hasnt been a problem." So as it was going. Davis was looking tough, with Layton right behind them. Clearfields Doug Evans and Don Gladfeltcr helped keep Clearfield close but Gladfelter couldnt give Clearfield the lead heading into the final leg as he'd done in recent meets. As the third leg people were coming to the final handoff, Davis Jeff Singley still was giving the Darts the lead, Layton was second and Clearfield was third. BUT IN the final 47 seconds, Smith took the baton from Gladfelter and took off like no ones business. He was a good thirty to forty yards behind the leader but put on a spectacular show of running to beat both Davis and Layton at the finish line. SMITH CAME from way back in the final leg of the mile relay to give Clearfield the w in. At first Tom Kidd of Layton had helped give the Lancers the lead with 300 yards left in the second leg. That was after Todd Anderson had boomed out to give Davis the lead in the first leg. 1 - CHECK AND FILL TRANSMISSION FLUID UP TO 1 PT.
