By STEVE SMILANICH BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS, Utah (UPI) — Speedster Craig Breedlove of Los Angeles unofficially established a world land speed record of 462.72 miles per hour Tuesday in his jet-powered “Spirit of America,” Breedlove’s car was clocked at 442.59 mph on his first run through the measured mile on the sun-splashed Bonneviile Salt Flats in western Utah. On the return run he was timed at a blistering 498.13 mph. Breedlove cracked the world mark set only last week by Art Arfons of Akron, Ohio. Arfons’ mark was 454.02 mph. Breedlove’s car, a threewheeled racer, was sponsored by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.. and Shell Oil Co. The 28-year-old Breedlove became the third land speed racer to set a world record in re- cent weeks on the famed salt flats. The first was Tom Green of Wheaton, Ill. He drove Walt Arfons’ “Wingfoot Express” to a mark of 413.20 mph, breaking the mark of 407.45 mph set in 1963 by Breedlove. Green’s mark fell three days later tp Art Arfons and his “Green Monster.” Breedlove’s first record was set Aug. 5, 1963. It toppled the 394 mph mark set by England’s John Cobb in 1947, and returned for the first time since 1928. Officials of the United States Auto Club emphasized that the speed is computed from the to(See BREEDLOVE Page 4) Generally Fair Provo Office, For Ads, News, Circulation: through Wednesday.
