Show Tuesday, October 6, 1970 THE HERALD, Provo, Utah—Page 9A’ ° Pre-Winter Check-Up Cleanliness Important in Body-Paint Shop Of Tires Important With winter approaching motorists should checktheir tires and make sure their cars are prepared for the season’s snow Band icy conditions. Snow tires on the rear wheels with plenty of tread or added studs give the best assurance of safety and improved car performance in cold regions of the country. For motorists kn warmer climates, new tires with good tread should be ufficient. ™ Maintaining air pressure as recommendedin the owner’s mantal remains vitally important everywhere. Also,it is im- nortant to remember that baldingtires of any type increase he chances of skidding and cause a lack of steering and braking effectiveness. In the Interest of Safety = Ross R, Ormsby, Chairman of the Tire Industry Safety = council, advises that a 2/32 inch or less tread depth ina tire Ais a sound guideline — in the interest of safety — for remov- The body and paint shop you look for is the one with the facilities that will give you a good-as-factory finish. How to qualify a good shop? Simple! An outstanding paint shop will have a good reputation. A few well placed questions among close friends and business acquaintances will bring forth someinteresting facts regarding quality of work, service and price. Insurance companies are another excellent source for determining the best paint and body shops in town. About 85% of the body rebuilding andrefinishing business is done on a bid basis with insurance companies. Responsible shops are known by their good reputation for square dealing and top notch work.nanship. Browse Through Shop Browsing through a paint and body shop, one can further qualify it, Out in the shop netice if they thoroughly clean the car body with clean-off liquid and remove the wax, and if the body is washed underneath? Is the car sanded, primed, masked and all chrome removed? Look around. What kind of housekeeping is maintained out in the shop? Is there sandpaper lying around in the spray area? This would ng the tire from use. As one of the or pointed out, one comes less and newly added studs would have too great a protusion. No stud should extend more than 2/32 of an inch from the tread. Foi these reasons missing studs should not be replaced and tires should not be restudded after the original studs wear out. It is equally important that studdedtires are put on the same wheel each winter. When removed, they should be marked for wheel position and direction of rotation. If placed on a different wheel position the following winter the studs will develop abnormal wear patterns which can lessen the tire’s ability to retain the stud in its tread surface. Replacement studded tires on rear wheels should also be of the same size and construction as the conventional tire found on the front. Should all four wheels have studded tires they should all be of the same size and construction. Check Inflation Many states and provinces restrict the months in which studded tires may be used — generally they designated a specific date in October or November and run through the winter monthsuntil April or May. He also cautioned against underinflation. Reducing the amount of pressure in a tire does not give it better traction as many motorists suspect, but actually gives less traction. Motorists were urged to maintain the air pressure recommended by the owner’s manual and to observe the maximum air pressure and load limits noted on thetire’s sidewall. The Council cautions that these are maximum figures on the sidewall — not recommended pressureor load ratings. Tire manufacturers recommend that inflation be checked at least once a month, However, for every temperature changeof 1¢ degrees F. a tire will increase or decrease its air pressure by one pound. Therefore, manufacturers urge that tires be checked more often during the winter months. In a good practices shop, the sanding takes place in a remote specified area in order to avoid surface contamination on the job site. Notice how the painteris dressed. Does he havea clear starched uniform? A soiled, linty shop coat throw; off particles that can mar a wet surface. Are there quick dry ovens to reduce surface contamination while drying? The presence of all or most of these features usually indicates a volume business re- sulting from good work. How About Temperature Is the paint shop equipped with well kept tools? Although the paint spray equipment may not be readily discernible, is there a spray booth with a filtered air intake or at least an enclosure with adequate exhaust to assure a contamination-free paint job? How about room temperature? Is it in the comfortable 10’s? This proper level of temperature has a bearing on the properties of paint Keep Wary Eye On Pedestrians Motorists are not the only ones whouse the streets and highways. Pedestrians often jaywalk, children hidden by parked cars dart into the street, cyclists sometimes ride as if they were in an emptyfield, and animalsgive little heed to traffic. A clean,clutter-free work area is one of the most vital things to look for when selecting a quality paint shop. Even the look of the technician’s clothing is important since a clean and a starched uniform prevents lint from getting into the paint. A first-class paiat job costs more butis worth it in the long run according to the experts. and the ultimate quality of the paint job. All such irresponsible behavior is aggravated during bad weather, when people become more impatient. Keep your eyes moving to spot these potential emergencies.
