Show Ee Tuesday, December 7, 1971 Roberts Separates Sinners Fromthe New OrleansSaints By MURRAY OLDERMAN AN FRANCISCO — }—It wasbrutal, those hot days last July in Hatties burg, Miss. Mutiny hung as heavy as the humidity. The temperature hit legrees, and on the practice field at Southern Mississippi, the thick-bodied pros keeled over like sodden dummies. They had gone for two straight weeks without a day or night off, putting on pads in the morning and in the afternoon, for scrimmagesin sessions that lasted from two to two and a half hours. It was unheard of in professional football. Their coach, J. D. Roberts, who had been a Marine, drove them relentlessly. Tha: one day alone, five players haa to have saline solutions administered intravenouslv. Andthat night the whole squad got together, sans coaches, for a protest meeting. They drew up a petition with all their beefs and it became so long that they all threw up their hands andsaid,‘ “Hey, this is ridiculous.” And they broke up dispiritedly. The survivors of this latter-day battle of Hattiesburg are now, four months later, the intensely spirited New Orleans Saints, banded together in common cause. They have upset the Los Angeles Rams, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers, the elite of the National Football League. They have tied the Oakland Raid ers. They are, to look at them, a lousy football team, piugged with pickup free agents and obscure draftees. But they are physical. They even hit during the week, another anomaly in pro foot- ball. At that, his victory in the Key West event was a close one—he nosed out Bob Magoon, this year’s national champion, by Just one minute. —Among new boating books on the market is “Practical Sailing” by Tony Gibbs, an editor of Motor Boating & Sailing magazine. He was a surprise successor to Tom Fears, the Saints’ original head man, during last fall's disastrous 2-11-1 campaign. He's a throwback in his attitudes about conditioning, permissiveness and team unity “Mike Tilleman was a good defensive tackle,” says Roberts, “but he was unhappy, so we obliged him and traded him.” Tilleman went to Houston for Glen Ray Hines, a good offensive tackle. “He's very strict,” says receiver Abramowicz, “and he’s very fair. You do like he wants or you're gone.” And so waen one asks Roberts if he has wavered at all during last summer's deg days when the Saints threatened rebellion, puzzled lines stitch his high forehead. “Rebel?” he asks. “Why should they rebel?” By MILTON RICHMAN NEW YORK (UPI)—The UPI Sports Writer lineup for this vear's college NEW YORK (UPI) —Five football bow! gam minutes after Frank Saterse 1 € Bowi Baton wastraded, the bleeding hearts Rouge La.
