Thirty years ago on a distant Pacific island, an attack was staged that affected thelives of Utah County residents nearly 3,300 miles away. On Dec.7, 1941, at 7:55 a.m,at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Japanese forces invaded in a surprise attack that turned the watery fortress into an “infernoof death and destruction.” Many Utah County residents recall the incident with vivid accuracy. According to BYU ‘Treasurer Emeritus, Keifer B. Sauls,‘no one was really afraid. We were just startled, and concerned with rumors of further attacks. I never had any doubt but that we would win.” Advice On School In its first edition after the Sunday morning attack, the “Y News” quoied Heber Wolsey, BYU's university relations chief, then a senior, as advising “if he's a senior, finish school, and then give the Japs all he's got.” Judge Maurice Harding of Provorecalled he wasbringing in the family Christmas tree whenheheardthe newsoverthe radio, “We were thinking of Christmas and peaceful things, when suddenly war was in the making,’ he said. It was a totally lost feeling.” Provo residents reacted in a mannerthat was indicitiveof the nationwide upset. Israel for four years has disregarded a resolution by the Security Council—which, unlike the assembly, has powers of enforcement—calling on it to withdraw from the Arab territory it seized during the 1967 war.
