Show Cougars Nip|Miners 56-54! Haskins Boils Sunday, February 10, 1974 Provo, Utah Watts Cookin’ 4 By JOE WATTS Game Officials Used Good Judgment in Tough Situation By MIKE TWITTY controversy yesterday as the Cougars edged Texas-E! Paso, 56-4, to keep the Miners from a share of the Western Athletic Conference lead. A live crowd of 13,482 and a regional television audience watched Troy Jones sink (wo important free threws and Mark Handygrab a crucial reboundin the closing seconds to preserve the win for BYU in a game As Forbes was getting ready to shoot his foul shot the UTEP coaches recognized that the clock was wrong. They began yelling at the officials, but that wasn’t out of the ordinary. The officials can’t be blamedfor not stopping action right then. No Legitimate Beef Forbes missed the foul shot, and so action still couldn’t be stopped. BYU wentinto a ball controi game and with 40 seconds remaining Forbes fouled BYU's ford Nielsen. That gave an opportunity to get the clcck sutation straightened out. Irv Brown checked with the statisticians and the timer and estimated that the clock wasin error by one minute and so had the clock set to show 1:40 remaining. After the game Haskinsshookhis finger at the timer andsaid, ‘‘That damn clock cost me the game. In a pressinterview after the gamehe said he felt the officials should have returned the time to the two-minute mark, but since the foul shot was missed it wasn’t quite feasible to do thateither. It was unfortunate the clock didn’t work right, but it is just one of those things. It’s something that can happen anytime. Haskins, however, has no legitimiate beef. The officials did the very best they could under a trying situation. Complains About Wrong Ref Haskins also bitterly complained about a foul called against UTEP’s Beto Bautista with 25 seconds remaining. Three Miners had BYU’s Grig Clawson surrounded and it appeared they weregoingto get the ball from him. A foul was whistled against Bautista by Glen Barlow. After the game, Haskinssaid, ‘‘Up at Utah the other night there were people laying all over the: floor from contact but Irv Brown wouldn’t call anything, and then tonight he calls a little hacking foul on Bautista. I'm sick of Irv Brown,’” However, the foui wascalled by Irv Brown and not Gien Barlow. Perhaps Haskinsis sick of Brown because he can’t be intimidated. Chronic Complainer Haskins, the great intimidator, was trying to work oneofficial against the other during the game. Once during an inbounds play Haskins yelled to Brown and said, ‘Barlow's choking. He’s been working hard, but he’s starting to choko.”’ Brownretaliated with, ‘‘No, he’s not.” Perhaps he sould have retaliated with a technical, but then Haskins must be immune to technicals. He's an excellent coach, and a fun person to be around, but when it comes to officials he's a chronic complainer. So chronic he can't be believed! ‘ io BYU’S BELMONT ANDERSONscoresa crucial basket and contact with Anderson. The basket gave BYU a 42-39 lead turned it into a three point play when a foul was called on with 8:26 remaining in the game. Here’s how things happened. Doug Richards made a jump shot to put BYU ahead 52-49. Press statisticians always jot downthe time of each basket. Theofficial playby-play report, kept by a BYU statistician, recorded the time as 2:05 when he made the basket. On UTEP’s next trip down the floor Jim forbes was fouled and went to the foulline with the clock showing 1:00 remaining. It was clearly in error, but by how much isn't exactly known. Video replay could determine the matter. It was assumed that the clock wentin error when it shifted to the two-minute mark, and instead jumped clear to the one-minute mark. Eventually the officials returned the clock the entire minute, which was about as close an estimate as could be madeat that time.
