Next to cardiovascular disease, cancer is our . , ; number two killer. Cancer has been with us for a long time and will not leave voluntarily. It is a complex disease involving all tissues ! in the body. As almost everyone knows, cancer is a condition in which previously normal cells suffer a change that makes them grow and reproduce uncontrollably. More people are dying of cancer than in the past, but only because they are not dying of other diseases. They live ; longer and have greater opportunity to develop cancer. It becomes much more ' common in people old enough to have ' experienced the necessary sequence of genetic injuries. At present, lung cancer ' i the only type of cancer regarded as a modern epidemic. Prevention Currently it is within our power to ' prevent a third or more of all cancer ( Overwhelming evidence has , deaths. ' established that smoking alone is , responsible for 25 to 30 percent of all cancer deaths. This includes not only lung cancer, but also cancer of the bladder, throat, pancreas, esophagus ' and other parts of the body. Alcohol consumption is another important cause of cancer. Heavy : drinking increases the drinkers suscept tibility to tumor though the effect is not as strong as that of smoking. It seems likely, but not firmly diet also !n established, that a high-ffavorsj development of cancer. Without elaborating on the whys, it is important '' to mention at least two methods of ' prevention. One is to eat a diet relatively low in fat. The other is to eat more vegetable fiber such as that found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. This is' one reason I advocate leaning ! toward a vegetarian diet low fat milk ' and a little meat are needed, but mainly unprocessed fruits, vegetables and whole grains. j ,, Additional causes Contact with certain chemicals, ; asbestosj or other substances mainly at levelsj encountered at work can also cauie cancer. A single airline crash, such as the one that killed 78 people in Washington, D.C., last January, is front page news and prompts a federal investigation. But death on the highway remains, for the most part, an invisible slaughter. On April 14, 1982, President Reagan called for an end to that slaughter on the highways and signed an Executive Order which creates a blue ribbon commission to deal with the drunk driver problem. Along with five other Congressmen, I was invited to the White House Rose Garden to participate in the effort to publicize the formation of the drunk driver commission. Scores of national organizations and concerned about the companies were also in drunk driver problem attendance at the Rose Garden signing. A few of those who attended to show their support for the commission were the following: the chairmen of the board of GM, Ford and Chrysler, the President of GEICO Insurance, leading brewers and distillers, state and local government officials, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), plus other church and civic leaders. In his statement before signing the Executive Order, President Reagan You . the point that the Commission will only assist the states in controlling the drunk driver. During the course of our conversation, I was glad to learn that the President was d about the drunk driver problem. 1 was also pleasantly surprised a! the immediate support President Reagan gave to the idea of. a commission. He feels strongly about ending the useless slaughter caused by drunk drivers. In fact, he used the words "to curb the slaughter" in a note the President penned to Secretary of Transportation Drew Lewis the day of my visit. In the note to Lewis, the President told him to get the wheels rolling to form the commission. With the strong support of President Reagan, I am confident we now have the clout we need to tackle the stubborn drunk driver problem. With diseases like cancer which kill thousands yearly, we can only pray and hope for a cure. However, we can do something immediately to save the lives of the 26,000 Americans who will be killed this year by drunk drivers. More strict enforcement of drunk driver laws and better alcohol rehabilitation, programs are being used effectively in many areas of ,the U.S. right now. All we need to do to stop much of the death on our highways is to implement, in all states, the programs and knowledge that we already have and that we can develop. A national drunk driver commission will help us do just that. well-verse- 1 ? . . . Mai E. On November 13. 1981, I met the President in the White House Oval Office to present him with a letter signed by a bipartisan majority of Congress which urged the formation of a drunk driver commission. In our meeting we discussed what, the proper role of, the federal government should be in tackling the drunk driver issue. We agreed that, in the end. the responsibility to deal with the drunk driver lies with the states. However, we also agreed that the states sometimes need prodding from private organiza Time surely flies. The weeks really go by quickly. Here it is January already! Bruce Jennings daughter, DeAnn, was in a store in Gunnison last week. After leaving the store she discovered that her billfold was missing. The billfold contained the usual credit cards, ID cards, drivers license, and about $40 (I dont know how these rich people get $40 in their billfold, but she had it). She called the store, but they were unable to locate the missing billfold. Someone had apparently picked it up. A few days later, DeAnn received the billfold in the mail, with the $40 missing, and a note which said: "Sorry about the $40. Good deeds dont come cheap! So how about that? I guess she should be grateful to get the billfold back, along with the valuable contents, and Im sure she was. But where does that leave the honesty question? The pilferer was enough to return the billfold, but not honest enough to return the money. I think thats sad. Talk about selling your birthright for a mess of pottage. Speaking about honest, I heard about a contractor who wanted to give a government official a sports car. The official said, "Sir, common decency and my basic sense of honor would never permit me to accept a gift like that. The contractor said, "I quite understand your position. Suppose we do this: Ill sell you the sports car for $10. The official thought a moment, then replied, "In that case, Ill take . . two." "It is much easier to get drugs than it was five years ago. "You cant walk down the hall without seeing someone stoned. If such descriptions of America's drug and alcohol abuse problem make you glad you live in Utah, you may be surprised to learn that these comments were made by high school students from Spanish Fork, Bountiful, and Ogden! These comments were made as part of a survey I took last winter among Utah students who were appointed by their high school principals to serve as my Youth Advisory Committee, which I formed to keep me aware of the opinions and concerns of Utahs youth. The committee responded to another survey on drug and alcohol abuse more recently, and I thought their observations were well worth sharing, particularly after one student commented that "parents seem to be naive about drug and alcohol problems. A look at the Youth Committees views of the roots of substance abuse and some avenues of addressing it can perhaps help erase that lack of parental awareness and understanding. A solid 65 percent of the survey's respondents said peer pressure is the strongest influence that pushes a young person toward drug or alcohol abuse. "Young kids are just trying to find themselves," said a student from Davis County. "It is important that each be Manti . Weather The Manti weather data is reported each week by Lee J. But until they do, Utah parents can start in a simpler, yet perhaps more effective way to combat substance abuse among our young. "The only way to really stop abuse is to try to build up family relationships," a Utah County student counseled us. Advertising Pays t Abnormal weather in parts of the country give more reason for Utah families to plant gardens, says State of Department Agriculture Climatologist, E. Arlo Richardson at Utah State University. Richardson explained that this year frost has hit garden and fruit products in Florida and Georgia. Also, persistent wet weather in California has prevented harvest, causing many vegetable crops to rot in the field.. The potential for storage is very great.. That means prices for . available products in the food stores may skyrocket. It can hurt most those people affected by the economy who have less money with which to buy food. Having a garden and managing it properly may mean the difference between a family going hungry and not going hungry. The climatologist noted that there should be plenty of water available this year for growing gardens. He advises using it and the growing season climate to best advantage by planting various vegetables when they will grow best and by growing multiple crops on the same soil. Follow such early season crops as radishes, lettuce, and peas with more peas and string beans for later harvest and with warmer crops in the same area. The climatologist suggests looking to the stages of apple development in your area as a good indicator of the optimum times to plant various plant groups of vegetables. Those groups are indicated in the Extension Circular 313, "Orowing Vegetables," available from county extension offices. The circular gives recommended varieties and a home garden planting chart., It states that the hardy group should be planted as soon as the soil dries out in the spring (when the apple buds first begin to swell, April in Sanpete Couny ty). The group should be a week or two later (apple buds at tight cluster stage, first week in May in Sanpete County). The tender group can be planted at the last expected spring frost (apples at full bloom, middle of May in Sanpete). The very tender group would be planted about two weeks after the tender group (when little green apples have first developed, last week in May or first week in June in Sanpete). Richardson believes that even though unusual weather has delayed some garden planting this year, sufficient food can be raised to really aid the family pocketbook. It should be possible even for those who dont have a large area for a garden. Called to serve LDS Missions Elder Ethan Everett .
