Show Monti Mouongor, Thundoy Docombor f, 1912 Pago 1 1 County Commissiomi' scans tentative budget by Pat Mellor according to the Countys certified public accountant, Willard Smith, Requests for 1983 budget expenditures total about $1,908,000, Smith said. So theres about a $200,000 difference between whats available and what's asked for," observed Commission Chairman Ned Mad- - The commissioners were slated to The Sanpete County Commission got its first brief look at a proposed 1983 budget Tuesday and promptly observed that if the commission could find a way to trim $200,000 off the budget requests submitted, things should be fine. begin serious efforts to pare the budget on Wednesday, but probably will face a series of attempts to trim departmental requests before the official budget meeting slated for December 14. About $1,716,000 is anticipated in revenue for Sanpete during 1983, Sperry Univac contributes to Snow College electronics The Snow College Electronics Program has received another boost from Sperry Univac. This is a continuation of support which began three years ago. The company has on a loan basis, contributed electronics equipment which will provide electronics students with hands-o- n experience. The value of the equipment is near $50,000. In acknowledging this contribution, Snow College President, Steven D. Bennion, noted that there is no way the college could continue to maintain equipment when the electronics industry is changing so rapidly. The contribution of Sperry Univac is therefore very significant. They are furnishing equipment that will make our graduates very marketable. The company also presented the college with a cash scholarship Proaldofit Stovon D. Bonnlon, contribution. In making the Sporry Unlvac's Dick Shephard contribution, Sperry representative, George Groneman, indicated that he was proud to make this investment in future electronic technicians. Groneman also indicated that he and his company appreciated the sensitivity that Snow College had shown to the needs of industry in establishing the electronics program. He indicated that successful placement of graduates from the program was in a large part, the result of training the kind of technicians that are needed in industry. Superintendents and legislative council members from Gass schools have agreed on a recommendation that would have Manti High School continue to compete with its traditional rivals in athletics, forensics and music. The recommendation will go to the legislative council of the Utah High School Activities Assn, when it meets in January to realign the states high school activity regions. Both the South Sanpete and North Sanpete School Districts had objected to the original realignment plan because it would have had Manti competing in one region and traditional rivals North Sanpete and Juab in a different region. That plan would also have had Manti travelling long distances to Emery, San Juan and Grand high schools. The recommendation that will be submitted to the UHSAA legislative council in January as an alternative to the original plan will divide Region 10 into two divisions. division one would In 1983-8- 4 include Juab, North Sanpete, Manti, South Sevier and Richfield for all activities and Grand for football and boys and girls basketball. Division two would include Millard, Delta, Dixie, Pineview ( a new school) and Hurricane for all activities and Cedar City, a school, for league play only. In 1984-8- 5 division one would include Juab, North Sanpete, Manti, Millard, Delta and Grand and division two would Include Richfield, South Sevier, Dixie, Pineview, Hurricane and Cedar City. This arrangement would then continue to be rotated year after year. The plan that we will propose contains some minor compromises," Principal Ivan Rowley said, but we think it is much superior over the plan the legislative council proposed. For one thing, it would enable us to continue participating with our neighboring schools and for another it will require much less travel and absence from school. 2-- A If W 4 levy for 1983 is actually an indefinite figure until valuation can be determined, Mr. Smith noted. As a result of the passage of Proposition 1 on the November ballot, authorizing the legislature to take certain actions regarding property taxes and business taxes, the mill levy for 83 may not be set until next August. Sanpete County can't count on as many redemptions taxwise as last year, either, cautioned Smith. Revenues will also be lower due to cuts in the appropriations for 1983. RR tax funds Commissioner Newt Donaldson raised the question of the railroad tax funds which courts have decided must be placed partially in a trust fund pending the outcome of a court case. Chairman Madsen said the problem began when the legislature rolled back valuations to the 1978 level on homes, etc., and left railroad valuations at their higher assessment. The railroads countered that all the properties the counties assessed should be on the same formula. It seems like a good argument, Mr. Smith concurred, but Commissioner Madsen said in his opinion, the railroads had never been evaluated at their true worth anyway. The Treasurers office said the county's railroad tax check had been received in the amount of $58,967, but that the railroad had stopped payment on the check and had issued Andreasen. We want to thank the people of Ephraim, Manti and Sterling who supported the campaign by pur a second check in the amount of about $30,000. The remainder owed the county apparently has been sent to the trust fund. We'd already processed the first check and marked everything 'paid', Treasurer Earl Clark said. What a court-establish- pain." The commissioners did some fast calculating and figured that 45 of the railroad tax moneys would normally go to the school districts, anyway, and the cities would also come in for a portion of the tax moneys, leaving the county with about $6,000 less in revenues in the said end. The commissioners Sanpete is not encountering as much trouble as other counties due to the 1 think 90 court injunction: of Juab's taxes are railroads, Commissioner Donaldson stated.
