Obituaries Stanford Madsen y f Funeral services with full military rites were held for Stanford Madsen , 90, who died at a Fillmore, Utah, hospital on July 19, 1983, after a short illness, were held in the Manti d Ward chapel on July 23, 1983. Interment was in the Manti City Cemetery. Mr. Madsen was born in Manti, Utah, on April 7, 1893, to Peter Hemming and Karen Marie Hansen Madsen. He graduated from Manti High School and from Utah Agricultural College in irrigation engineering. At the college, now USU, he lettered in track for three years. He married Grace Amberzeen Anderson in Manti on October 2, 1918. The marriage was eternalized in the Manti LDS Temple in 1920. Mrs. Madsen died on March 9, 1976. j m, fflumi First-Secon- Mr. and Mrs. Glen J. Nielson Glen J. His service included being Calif.; Keith A.. Brigham City; Lee ward clerk under three bishops and S., Whittier. Calif., and Kanosh, working with the Mutual and Utah; 25 grandchildren, four greatScouting program. He was a grandchildren and six member of the Manti City Council Mr. Madsen served with the Utah National Guard and then with the U.S. Army during World War I. He was an active member of the Manti post of the American Legion, serving in several positions, including that of commander. Melissa Peterson and Steve Lund Popular young couple set August temple ivedding date Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Peterson of Mayfield are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter Melissa to Steve Lund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lund of Manti. Their marriage will be solemnized Friday, August 12 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. A reception will be held that evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Mayfield Ward cultural hall. Melissa is a 1978 graduate from Gunnison Valley High School. She attended USU, majoring in home economics before serving a mission for the LDS Church in Minnesota. Steve is a 1978 graduate from Manti High School. He served a mission for the LDS Church in the Colorado Denver area. He has been attending Snow College. The couple will reside in Butte, Montana where Steve will be Montana College of attending Mineral Science and Technology, majoring in petroleum engineering. Mr. and Mrs. Nielson were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 8, 1933, by Apostle Melvin J. Ballard. They are the parents of five children: Catherine Russell, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Larry, North Hollywood, Calif.; Barbara Mordccai, Fremont. Calif.; Marilyn Edwards, Salt Lake City, and Margaret Allen, Marysvale. They have 22 grandchildren and one They also have an Samoan family. Lanu and adopted Va Palcpoi and their four children. Mr. Nielson was born in the historic home in which the couple live, to Louis B. and Anne Anderson Nielson. He completed Ephraim Elementary and High School and attended Snow College. He served a r mission in the Eastern States. He served in various church organizations and as a counselor to three bishops. He then served as bishop of the Ephraim West Ward for six years. He has been assigned dramatic reading roles in numerous church and civic events and has given many public addresses at funerals and on other occasions. He is now a South Sanpete Stake Patriarch. He and his w ife are home two-yea- teaching companions. Following major heart surgery, and a hip replacement, he retired after a successful farming career. He helped pioneer the Ephraim turkey industry, raised purebred sheep and prize winning Charolais cattle. Ram-bouill- Dean Watson Bench Dean Watson Bench, 81, died July 23, 1983, in a Salt Lake hospital. Mr. Bench was born November 26, 1901, in Fairview, Utah, to John Longman and Lenora Anderson Bench. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints to Great Britain, and received his education at Brigham Young University. On June 30, 1926, he married Frances Wonnacott in the Manti LDS Temple. Mr. Benchs lifelong career was in the field of education. He was principal of Mohrland School in Mohrland, Utah from 1926-36- ; supervisor of Emery County Schools from 1935-39- ; principal of North School from 1939-43- , Sanpete High and a teacher and principal at Bryant Junior High School from 1954 until his retirement in 1967. y Mr. and Mra. David C. Alder Open house will honor Mr. Bench served as a temple worker in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and was a member of the Bonneville Stake high priest quorum. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Dr. Ruel Bench of Los Angeles. California; Dr. David N. Bciuh of Saratoga. California, and Dr. James D. Bench. La Mesa. California. One of Mr. Bench's surviving sisteis is Nora (Mrs. Wilbur) Cox. of Manti; the other sister is Ireta Updyke, Phoenix, Arizona. Surviving brothers are Rees E. Bench, Provo; G. Worth Bench. Fairview; R. Kirby Bench, Fairview, and E. Walter Bench. Las Vegas. Mr. Bench is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine Alders on anniversary The children of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Alder of Manti, will honor their parents in an open house to celebrate their Golden Wedding, Sunday, July 31st at the Manti Senior Citizens Center from 4:30 until 8 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Alder were married November 1, 1933 in the Manti LDS Temple. They are the parents of six children, five of whom are living. Ardith Stewart, Santa Clara; Carl J. Alder, West Jordan; Jay D. Alder, Manti; Val C. Alder, Manti; Carma Kadena Air Base, Peterson, Okinawa and Udell D. Alder (deceased 1948). They have 26 living grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Alder are celebrating three months early so their youngest daughter can be present before leaving for Okinawa. friends and relatives are invited to attend the open house. All No gifts please, As a young child she moved with the family to Manti, Utah. She was educated in the Manti and Richfield schools. She married Rudolph Hope November 10, 1937 in the Logan LDS Temple. He died in 1975. She was a devoted member of the LDS Church and held many positions in the auxiliary organizations of the David John Thomas Funeral services for David John Thomas, 61, who died of natural causes in an Orem hospital on July 24, 1983, were held at the Orem Sharon Stake Center on July 27, 1983. Interment was in the Orem City Cemetery. Mr. Thomas was born in Sunnyside, Utah, on March 24, 1922, to David John and Harriet Thomas. After his fathers death, his mother married Henry Maylctt and he spent much of his early life in Manti. He was a graduate of Manti High School. He enjovs reading the scriptures, swimming, playing his mandolin, reciting poetry and is an avid gardner. He, and his wife, care for their large lot w ith its abundance of shrubs, flowers and trees. Mrs. Nielson was born in Twin Falls. Idaho, to Laurence G. Kathryn Marquardson Kirkman. Following attendance at Idaho public schools, she graduated from the LDS School of Nursing in Salt Lake City. She met a great deal of her time doing temple work. She worked in Ralph's Pharmacy in Manti and in the Mt. Pleasant Drug Store for many years. She was an active member in many clubs and civic uiuiui. one spent practice her profession by caring for neighbors, relatives and friends and has assisted with many home deliveries before the advent of a nearby hospital. She has served on various stake and ward organizations throughout their married years. Some appointments she has most enjoyed were with Manti Temple assisting baptisms as South Sanpete Supervisor: teaching in Sunday School, Relief and Society, Primary performing temple work, participating with music groups, serving as a missionary on Temple Hill, taking part in the Mormon Miracle Pageant, serving as a Relief Society visiting teacher and as a home teacher with her husband. In civic affairs she has been involved in many interesting projects: in the Red Cross, as an board Fphraim Public Library member, as a writer for the First 100 Years publication, as a teacher, an officer in the Ephraim Literary Club and Fort Ephraim Camp DUP and as a newspaper reporter. She has conducted historic tours of Ephraim for civic, church and educational groups and is a member of the Ephraims Pioneer Park Committee. 4-- Meeting and helping people is an important activity for Mrs. Nielson. She also enjoys raising flowers and reading. The Nielsons have similar goals and have worked together constantly to achieve 50 successful years of marriage. When interviewed they mention these as guiding principles: to truly love each other; to cultivate a kind sense of humor; to be completely honest in all dealings w ith everyone; to always be considerate and have empathy for others: to live in peace with one's fcllowmcn; to work together during difficult times without complaint; let anniversaries and special occasions always hold an important place in your plans; let the gospel be the guiding light in every phase of life to help you be faithful to the end. Vilate Christensen Hope for Vilate services Funeral Christensen Hope 79, will be held today, Thursday July 28, 1983 at 12 o'clock, noon, at the Spring City Ward Chapel. Mrs. Hope died Mon., July 25 in the Sanpete Valley Hospital in Mt. Pleasant of cancer. She was born in Richfield, Utah November 23, 1903 to Lars Peter and Karen Jacobsen Christensen. Mr. Nielson was elected to a term on the city council. her husband at this hospital w hen he was her patient during his recovery from surgery. Todd Austin arrived at the Gunnison Valley Hospital weighing in at 9 lbs. Brothers and sisters welcoming him are Chris 10, Anna 8, Teresa 6, Jennylyn 4 and Timothy 2. are Mrs. Nila Grandparents wife, Orem; one son, two daughters: John David. San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Kurt B. (Susan) Walker, and Mrs. Kevin D. (Mary) Mangum, both Orem, and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Merrill (Mclva) Gottfredson and Mrs. Fayne (Elzina) Laney, both Springvillc. .c Kiesel, Manti, who boosts 28 grandchildren, and Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Beal. aKo Manti, who have 11 grandchildren.
