Show Mtingr-Entrprl- Salina Auction Caution: Flowing grain hazardous by Thomu A Reeve Dont become grain bin casualty. This is s warning that is given to fanners and hired hands who may be tempted to enter a grain bin at harvesting time. who An unsuspecting person enters a grain bin while the unloader is running may sink in the flowing grain before he realizes what has happened. It only takes four or five seconds to become helpless in flowing grain. Within a few seconds more, the person can be completely submerged and soon suffocate. During unloading of the grain, the binned grain may bridge, forming a hollow cone under the surface of the bridge. To start the grain flowing again, it is necessary to break this bridge. Actually, a partially unloaded bin may be a trap because the bridged grain could hide the dangerous cavity. The following pointers are given to avoid becoming a grain bin casualty: yourself with a rope and harness so that you have a way of getting out. Have two extra people handy in case something happens; one to hold the rope, and one to get extra help if necessary. Because of the tremendous pull that flowing grain can have on a person, use a rope and safety harness to support and lift you in the 1. If grain bridges, switch off the unloader and use a pipe or some other long object to break the bridge and get the grain flowing. Never enter a bin while the unloading operation is in progress. While bridged grain may look perfectly safe from the top, it could hide a cavity. 2. If you must enter a bin, disconnect the power source to the unloader and make sure no one can turn it on while you are inside. If the grain should start flowing, stay near the outer wall and keep walking until the flow stops or the bin is empty. 3. Install ladders in all bins. This will provide an exit if you need to get out, as well as a safe way of getting into the bin. However, even if there is a ladder in the bin, you must be able to get to it. If you walk out to the center of the bin and get caught in flowing grain, you may not be able to reach the ladder. 4. If you must enter a bin, tie Wrestling Clinic Aug. 6 thru 10 Each day 9:30 3:30 Gunnison High School Wese Christiansen, Head Wrestling Coach at Ricks College, and Ron Peterson, 8 state titles will be on hand to show you how to wrestle.
