Show Msngr UP&L protests UMPA plan to deliver power by PttMellor A protest from Utah Power and Light concerning an application from the Utah Municipal Power Associates to deliver power into the Sanpete area was taken under advisement by the Sanpete County Commission on Tuesday in order to give the UMPA 30 days to respond to allegations contained in the Utah Power and Light statement. Utah Power, which currently supplies power to some communities in Sanpete either fully or in part, filed a protest of several pages with the Sanpete County Commission concerning the UMPA proposal. Several cities in Sanpete belong to the Utah Municipal Power Associates and have banded together to deliver power to member cities at the lowest possible rates feasible for the cities. County attorney Ross Blackham recommended that the commission give UMPA at least 30 days to respond to the allegations made by Utah Power and Light, saying. News Briefs Eleanor Madsen Catherine Daniels Messenger Office Some of their (UP&Ls) points are valid, but some Im not so sure The Sanpete County Commission approved the sale of an acre of land north of Fountain Green for S2S, and heard another developer explain plans to construct a steak house featuring dancing and a bar in Chester at the monthly meeting of the Sanpete County Commission on Tuesday. Rex Ivory and his son Ronald advised the commission that they e needed a portion of Sanpete County property almost due north of Fountain Green on which to run sprinkler irrigation lines in a manner consistent with the remainder of their property. The commissioners approved the sale on the spot for a price of S2S for the acre. one-acr- Commissioner Ned Madsen said the franchise previously granted to Utah Power and Light to deliver power into Sanpete was a nonexclusive franchise, implying that other companies could also obtain franchises. It would be interesting, Commissioner Madsen said, to see whether another association could bring power into Sanpete on a price competitive with Utah Power and Lights. I dont think we ought to take Utah Power and Lights word as gospel, agreed commissioner Newton Donaldson. "I cant see them monopolizing the area. This protest they sent us threatens to sue if we let another company in." But they dont say who they will sue," Attorney Blackham observed. The matter of the protest was tabled for further discussion at the September commission meeting. south of Chester. The men were referred to the Sanpete County Planning Commission, which will study the proposal and make a recommendation to the Commission regarding a zoning variance or change. The proposed development is located in an agricultural zone. Following a zoning change recommendation, the pair was advised, they would have to obtain a building permit, wastewater disposal and well approval, and finally a beer license from the County. ten-acr- Schools score high South Sanpete School Districts schools scored above the national average in the 1984 Statewide Educational Assessment administered by the Utah State Office of Education. State legislators, Republican state delegates, and community leaders all over Utah agree: There is no substitute for experience, especially when it comes to Utahs $2.4 billion budget. Resources are scarce. And the candidates who are best qualified to balance the needs of the state with the ability of taxpayers to pay are Norm Bangerter and Val Oveson. For ten years, Bangerter has worked hard in the state legislature of those years to do just that-ei- ght in leadership positions and four of those years as Speaker of the House seeding will be much greater.
