BY PAT MELLOR Sanpete County cannot continue Commissioner Keller Christenson asked the sheriff how his present logging of time spent in Moroni measured up to the compensation received. Sheriff Anderson said he had no calculations on that, but added that it was difficult to get the required amount of time in under the old contract, because of the Garcia ruling on overtime and the county commission Tuesday. Anderson said he had heard that Moroni Citys budget for law enforcement protection by the County would be cut for the coming fiscal year from $20,000 to $10,000. Last year Moroni decided to do away with its city police force and just contract with the county for law enforcement coverage. For this county coverage, they agreed to pay commissions reluctance to approve overtime or compensatory time for police officers who worked more than their scheduled hours. For this reduced payment of only $10,000, Sheriff Anderson said, the county should not have to patrol Moroni a guaranteed number of hours. The county will handle emergency calls only for the $10,000 contract, and will patrol the area $20,000. Later in the year the city complained that county services to the city were inadequate and the county officers were not regularly patrolling the area. Sheriff Anderson said he had revised schedules and Talent Show, untor division: Kristen Dyreng, Melinda Despaln, Laura Ftnlinson, Mtcole Herring. Each team reviewed what the ambulances carried and where materials were, how the oxygen was turned on and how to use the associated equipment, what kind of bandages, splints, stretchers, cervical collars, etc. are available. their Teams also refreshed memories as to what equipment is portable, how it can be used, and for how long. The emergency jump kit boxes were opened and inspected and contents noted. Once teams had toured the back of the ambulance, members reviewed the drivers section. Siren and intercom uses were explained and their use shown by Tom Adams and Mike Black, and teams took turns using the equipment, including the hand-hel- d walkie-talki- e, which meeting was given over to odds and ends discussion, led by Training Officer John David. The members heard a presentation by Rod Mellor, Ron Hughes, and Joanne Bock on the handling of a recent accident, then there was general discussion on what could have been done differently, what was done well and what could have been done better. All agreed that a tagging procedure would be useful in a multiple-injur- y accident and that the necessary items should be bought to keep on the ambulances. Mark Shaw sent word that it would be best for someone else to be the Manti Training Officer Assistant, as it is difficult for him to attend every meeting, and the Association chose Scott Layton to replace him There will be no training meeting in July, as the normal meeting date will fall during the Pageant production and EMT coverage will be stretched to handle this event as well as normal activity. Gets Masters is used when EMTs need to attend patients that the ambulance can't get close to. Radio communication with the sheriffs office and the hospitals was also reviewed, with special emphasis on which channels to use to talk with different organizations. Last of all, the teams inspected the engine and Ron Hughes gave trouble-shootin- g procedures. Each team looked at the different tools available for engine work as well as for extrication efforts in a vehicle accident. After the ambulance drill, Rod Mellor discussed a new oxygen delivery system that has been installed on both ambulances and showed its use. The last part of the training Rebecca Anderson McGarry, 1986 graduate of the University of Utah in Vocal Performance, is scheduled to perform her Masters Vocal Recital Thursday, July 10, 1986 at 8 p.m. in the Art and Architecture Auditorium on the University of Utah Campus. The county faces a similar dilemma in its contract with the U.S. Forest Service for patrolling of the national forest land. The USFS is willing to pay the county $10,000 for patrolling at a rate a little over $12 per hour, but the county only has until October 1 to get in all its patrol time and earn the money. Some patrolling has already been done, Deputy Wallace Buchanan noted, but much more remains to be done for which the county could collect if it could spare the compensation manpower to accomplish this. The county commissioners found themselves in a dilemma on this, agreeing that they want the Forest Service's money but there is some confusion about arranging schedules to accommodate the increased patrol time on the mountain without violating their own policies against overtime for deputies. Also, the sheriff pointed out, patrolling on the mountain requires cars capable of With no carnival scheduled for the fair this year, because of the Amy Gillespie called to serve in Sacramento Saturdays schedule begins with workshops and a special guest speaker. Ardeth G. Kapp, General President of the Young Women will be the keynote speaker on Saturday afternoon. The afternoon activities will continue with an historical tour of the area followed by dinner in at the Manti and attendance Mormon Miracle Pageant that evening. Those who are interested are also encouraged to attend the 7 a.m. session at the Manti Temple that morning. Commissioner Keller Christenson said he had been in contact with the regional brand inspector, who resides in Axtell, and the brand inspectors will also be patrolling the mountains this summer. "That should help a little with the work of patrolling, because they will have radios, too," the commissioner observed, but added he didnt think the brand inspectors would have much success in controlling some illegal activities. "The big problem (with livestock on the mountain) is slaughter. They're bringing them down quartered up, in the trunk." e LDS Mission Amy Gillespie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gillespie, Spring City, has been called to serve a mission to Sacramento, California. She will enter the MTC July 16. A program in her honor is scheduled for July 13 at 10:50 a.m. in the Spring City Second Ward. Friends are invited to attend. Paintings may be picked up between 9 a.m. and noon, Monday, July 7. First Birthday liability insurance problem," Dr. McGarry said, anything (in the way of booth participation) would be doubly welcome. McGarry appeared to be the only commission member who had heard that there would be no carnival for the fair this year. Clerk Wayne Beck said he had heard nothing about the midway plans, either. Last year's carnival plans remained up in the air until nearly fair time because of a rise in liability insurance which made it impractical for carnival operators to contract for the fair. In the end, a carnival came in but many of the rides were not operated. Singles Conference will be held during Pageant The Singles Committee of the Manti Region would like to extend an invitation to all single adults in the state to attend the second annual Singles Conference to be held July 11th through 13th, 1986, at Snow College in Ephraim. The conference will be held in connection with the Mormon Miracle Pageant. The schedule of activities commences as 5 p.m. with registration at the New Institute Building across the street from the Snow College Campus at 55 North 100 East. A dinner will be held, to be followed by a dance and activities. We'll thrash this out and get back to you, Commission Chairman Wendell McGarry told the sheriff. Called on LDS Missions No carnival for fair With no carnival or midway concession planned for this year's Sanpete County Fair, County Commission Chairman Wendell McGarry said Tuesday, any participation the county can get in the way of booths at the fair will be doubly welcome. Sheriff Kennard Anderson asked the commission if they considered it appropriate that the Sheriffs office and the Search and Rescue Patrol combine efforts and have an informational-type booth at the fair. Search and Rescue has a Sanpete trailer theyve never used, Anderson said, which would make a good fair booth. covering the ground. Purchases of equipment to aid in patrolling are eligible for some compensation from the Forest Service, but the Sheriffs Office must pay 50 of any such purchase, Deputy Buchanan noted. The highlight of Sunday morning will be a special testimony meeting to be held on the grounds of the Manti Temple. Meals and housing are available and are included in the $45.00 registration fee. If housing is not required, the fee is $35.00. Please get your registration in as soon as possible.
