The two front rooms of the historic Canute Petersen house on Ephraims Main Street look like Santas workshop at this time of the year. Fragrant scents of cinnamon, apple, rose and lavender greets shoppers the coming in from the cold. But warmth of the house itself is more than matched by the amazing decorations, collection of folk-aornaments, toys, crafts and kitchen accessories crammed into the two parlor rooms which comprise the Parlor Gift Shop. in Many of the imported treasurers from Denmark, come the shop Sweden and Norway, the ancestral homes of most Ephraim residents. Perched in a window sill, knisse, the traditional Scandinavian Christmas elf, shares space with porcelain treetop angels dressed in crocheted costumes. A tiny figure commemorating the traditional St. Lucys Day, a wooden doll sports a crown of small candles. Other small porcelain dolls recline in miniature sleighs. A porcelain baby snoozes contentedly in its own small basket. Another doll sits near the piano, its wardrobe displayed on its chair and lap. The Parlor takes on the appearance of Santas headquarters with its Scandinavian wall hangings Santas and even large burlap sacks painted with bright folk-ar- t pictures. Tree ornaments are piled in baskets. Some of the most unusual are ducks from the Philippines carved from pine needles, sporting red silk ties for hanging on the tree. In a corner of the north parlor are folk-ar- t stencils great for using as homemade own on your detailing projects. Bright skeins of embroidery thread are stored in individual drawers waiting to be crafted into gift items. A special delight are the many books available in the parlor. Many are paperbound: y excellent paper doll books recreate the gifts given to little girls at the turn of the century. The dolls inside are resplendent in Victorian finery straight from the pages of Harper's Bazaar and the Godeys Lady's Book of the 1800's. Other books feature Thomas Nasts delightful portraits of Santa Gaus from a bygone era, ready to be colored or painted and turned into Christmas cards or gift tags. A number of the how-t- o books, from toy making to carving to paper folding, would make great stocking stuffers. A number of Christmas ornaments are little people, carved to resemble hunters, ball players, and other special interests. rt Amity Faith Hawks A telephone call last week brought good news of the arrival of a new baby girl at the home of Vernon and Barbara Hawks in Centralia,' Washington. ' - high-quali- e' Frances Warwood All the little special touches that make home brighter at Christmas and add to family traditions seem to have been collected in the Parlors two rooms. But Mrs. Nibleys shop doesnt just deal in imports. She is constantly encouraging local artisans to carve, sew, built and paint items for the shop. In fact, the shop which now consumes two rooms of her own home actually started as an outgrowth of the Ephraim Craft Guild, through which she and other Ephraim citizens have endeavored to encourage local people to produce the unique, items so popular with todays like-mind- gift-buyer- s. It just sort of grew out of the guild and the annual bazaar, Mrs. Nibley murmurs, waving a hand to indicate the two rooms now crammed with such a delightful array of items. Actually, 1 think theres everything here that people usually travel to Triad or Trolley Square to find. They really dont need to go out of the area to find these things any more." i on Christmas day Frances Madson Warwood, a longtime resident of Manti, will celebrate her 90th birthday on Christmas Day (1986).
