Show Social Scene Messenger-Enterpris- Thursday, April 16, 1987 e, Local girls I f Gary Bauer receives Eagle Award 4 Gary Reed Bauer, 13, received his Eagle Scout Award at a Court of Honor for Troop 18 of the Lone Peak District of the Great Salt Lake Council on March 14 in Sandy, Utah. Gary is the son of Brenton and Nedra Christensen Bauer of Sandy and the grandson of Rhoda P. and the late Hans Reed Christensen of Ephraim. Garys Eagle project was one of service to a local elementary school. He and his troop, under his direction, made lap chalk boards for the younger grades on which they could practice their spelling and math problems. During the court, he was presented with a United States flag which had flown over the White House. A special slide presentation of events in his life was shown by his father. His uncle, Elden Peterson, his grandmothers brother, retired Scout Richard Nelson, who received his Wood Badgo beads, Is olned for the presentation by his former Scoutmaster, Alburn Lyon. Former Manti resident completes Wood Badge Gary Reed Bauer Executive Director of the Great Salt Lake Council, spoke about the responsibilities of an Eagle Scout and also told some of his scouting experiences in paying tribute to Gary. Gary presented his mother with the mothers white neckerchief on which is embroidered a golden eagle. Rhoda was in attendance at the Court of Honor. She also spent last week there with family members and enjoying the general conference sessions with family members. Richard Nelson, formerly of Manti, recently completed a Wood Badge Leadership Training course for scouters and received his Wood Badge Beads at a Court of Honor. Alburn Lyon, Richard's former South Ward Scoutmaster, was 6 Manti Ladies Literary Club names Clubwoman of the Year June T. Cox has been selected as Representative Clubwoman of the Year for the Manti Ladies Literary Gub. In describing Mrs. Cox, Vada Hoggan, club president said, "June is a conscientious, dependable club member who is always willing to perform efficiently those duties that make a club successful. In her 37 years of membership in the club, Mrs. Cox has held the elective offices of corresponding secretary, vice president, president and treasurer. She has also held positions on every service committee of the club. Mrs. Cox has been active in civic organizations. She has been president and vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary and has been the poppy poster chairman for 10 years. She has served as president of the Activity Gub (service) and as a leader. She has worked on various community committees. Her church leadership positions have included working in Relief Society, Primary and Sunday School on both ward and stake levels. At the present time, in addition to teaching a Relief Society class, she is assistant ward finance clerk. She is noted for her many kindnesses and compas- club women of the year representing District of the Sanpete-Sevie- r General Federated Womens Clubs of Utah at their convention held April 11 in Manti. I was real lucky; I had two birthday parties which I was able to share with my Mom and Dad, Karl and Jolene Nielsen, and the rest of my family. Kristen received a letter from Mrs. Johaning the following Saturday. She excitedly showed the letter to all her friends, and later that afternoon the Utah family phoned the Johanings. The following week the Hansens received another letter from the Missouri family, accompanied by the copy of an article which appeared in their local paper. "This has been a very important and special experience in Kristens life," Mrs. Hansen said. "She will always remember the balloon, the northwest On March 16 this year, a farmer named Johaning was discing his cornfield outside Leslie, Missouri when he noticed a balloon caught on a weed. The balloon still had air in it. and Johaning could see something inside it, so he left his discing and popped the balloon. Inside was a note from Kristen Hansen, a girl scout in Sterling, Utah. On March 12, area girl scouts attended a promise circle in Mt. Pleasant. All were excited and happy: they had written notes which were to be placed in helium balloons, which the girls planned to release as part of the Girl Scouts 75th birthday oz. letters and articles, and the Johanings of Missouri, for the friendship they extended to her." Petruchlo (Mike Robinson) woos an unwilling Katherine (Christen Richards) in Snow's production of "The Taming of the Shrew." Snow College Theatre to present Shakespearian drama Shakespeares "The Taming of the Shrew" will be presented by Snow Colleges theatre department and will include a April first" for Snow College Theatre. According to division chairman Dr. Kim Christison, a special matinee performance of the play will be staged for high school students in the central Utah area. 22-2- April 9: Mr. and Mrs. Dan Higgins, Gunnison, baby girl, 8 lbs. 7 oz. A devoted teacher, she taught in the Manti Elementary School for many years; since her retirement she has done volunteer work tutoring students at that school. She has also helped with the Bookmobile. June is married to Morlin Cox. They have two daughters, one son and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Cox was honored with other schools. Four recommendations were sent to the Governor as a result of the meetings. They were: 1. Strict and consistent punishment for using drugs and alcohol in d the schools and at activities. 2. Funds for organizing and sponsoring "Peer Helper groups in high schools throughout the state. 3. More community involvement in the fight against drug and alcohol abuse. 4. Media coverage to make the general public aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The young people also requested that the Governor report back to the council next year as to what progress is made during the coming year to implement these recommendations. The girls were accompanied by Rhea Stewart, Prevention and Education Specialist and Kent Larsen, Alcohol Treatment Coordinator, both employed by Central Utah Mental HealthAIcohol and Drug Center. mu , 4-- Heather Larsen, daughter of Kent and Camille Larsen of Manti and Suzi Frischknecht, daughter of Steve and Kathy Frischknecht of Manti, both sophomores at Manti High School, attended the Governor's Youth Council in Salt Lake City held Wednesday and Thursday, April 8th and 9th. The girls were part of a group selected from throughout the state to represent the youth to formulate a way to implement plans to prevent drug and alcohol abuse in Utahs present to see Richard receive this award. Richard is the Scoutmaster in the Spanish Fork 14th Ward. He and his wife Marcia, are the parents of six children. Mr. and Mrs. Lee R. Olsen welcomed into their home March 20. 1987, Madison Mary and Treygan James Olsen. Madison was born May 2, 1979 and Treygan was born July 1 1 , 1982. They are biological siblings. They are welcomed into their new family by their parents, six brothers and four sisters. The Olsens have been living in Korea for the past 18 months, where Mr. Olsen is employed by the Department of the Army. Madison and Treygan will spend the next few months learning English before enrolling in DOD Schools this In a special project coordinated by Dr. Susan Burdett, Associate Profes- sor English, ten high schools have been invited to bring a busload of students to a free matinee performance on April 23. Over 300 high school students are expected to be on campus that day, said Dr. Burdett, which, coincidentally, is generally considered to be the day of Shakespeares birth. This will be a great opportunity for high school students, who are studying Shakespeare, to see how his works are t . k Trygan Jams and Madison Mary Olson coming fall in their respective grade levels. Charlene Brown will lecture News correspondent 44 W. Union Manti, Utah 835-029- 2 Charlene Brown, from KUTV in Salt Lake City, will be the speaker at Snow College's "A Womans Place lecture April 22. The subject of the lecture will be "What impact have women in general and minority women in particular had on the media? Brown has been with KUTV, an NBC affiliate, for three years. Originally from Oakland, California, she received a B.A. in English from UCLA and a masters degree in Journalism from UC Berkeley. The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 115 of the Noyes Building on the Snow College campus. There is no charge to attend the lecture and the public is welcome. performed. she added.
