Show Pass 6 Templars meet Kanab Cowboys in season opener Friday BY BRUCE JENNINGS Mantl High School will open its football season Friday afternoon at 4 on Snow Field against one of the toughest teams the schedule could provide. Cpmlng to town will be the Kanab Cowboys. State champions for the second consecutive year. The Cowboys have back a standout offensive backfleld, an offensive line that lost all but one starter to graduation and a defensive unit that has six starters back. 1-- A Chuck Lyons, a 3 180 pound quarterback, leads the Cowboy offensive that Includes one of the fastest runners In the state. 6-- Kanab, best known for Its passing game, will mix the passes and the runs In about equal proportion this year. The Templars will reportedly be smaller but quicker than last years edition. New Coach Bill Sullivan has installed what he calls a wing-bon- e offense. It may involve a sweep to one side of the defense, or a nm to either the inside or the outside of the other side of the defensive line. Or It may end with a downfleld pass. The starters on offense for the Templars Friday afternoon will be David Stevens, quarterback: Shane Denton, fullback: Danny Luster, halfback, and Jeremy Baker, wlngback. On the offensive line will be Tyler Bolll, split end: John Allen, quick tackle; Brian Cox, quick guard; Andy Jorgenson, center; Yorl Ludvlgson, strong guard; William Peterson, strong tackle; and either Courtney Wright or Bobby Sorenson, tight end. On defense the ends will be Brad Barton and Brian Cox; the defensive tackles Carl Cox and William Peterson; the linebackers Shane Denton, Yori Ludgvlgson and Guy Larsen. In the defensive secondary will be Loren Steck, Tyler Bolll, Jeremy Baker and Danny Luster. We have some good players we're holding In reserve and hope we can give them playing time, Coach Sullivan said. Wildfowl area to be dedicated Despite the drought, Sanpete County still has its wet lanrls. And Friday morning at 1 1 , two miles southwest of Mantl. one of the state's prime wet lands area, the Mantl Meadows Waterfowl Management Area, will be dedicated. Dee C. Hansen, director of the Utah State Dept, of Natural Resources, will be the keynote speaker. William H. Greer, director of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will give opening remarks. And a representative from Gov. Norman Bangerter and a representative from Ducks Unlimited, Inc. will also participate in the ceremony. Light refreshments will be available following the dedication. The route to the area, down Sixth South St. In Mantl and then left for another mile, will be clearly marked, according to Brad Bradley, South Sanpete District conservation officer. He said many farmers believe because their lands are assessed under the guidelines of the Farmland Assessment Act of 1969, or "greenbelt," It doesn't matter what the tax statements show.
