We reserve the right to withhold names with sufficient cause. Thank you To the Editor. We sure thank you for printing our 70th wedding announcement la your newspaper. I was bom Jan. 2, 1898 In Mantl, one of 62 class members of 19 13 from the 8th grade. I have for the moment forgot the lady teacher's name. Mrs. Clark Keller and Edwin Carpenter are the only ones In my age group that I recall names now. A few years ago a couple of town people planted pecan nuts here to try here and they produce good. I have eight 60 foot high trees around the home. We had over 20 bushel nuts excellent quality last year. I had planned on sending you your Christmas nuts this year. We had two early frosts this year when pecan nuts were In bloom. The frost killed the nuts. Our store had at least 10 bushel on sale last year. I noticed a poor smaller quality crop this year. I gathered about 10 lbs. poor quality this year. Anyway thanks for publishing our 70 years of marriage and hope we have a crop of nuts next year and that I remember your Christmas nuts. I will be 9 1 years old Jan. 2, 1989. This old age Is not funny. Loren D. Squire LaVer kin, Utah am writing this letter at the insistence of a Mantl High School fan In response to an Incident I Involving Mantl High School assistant basketball Coach Neely and myself. I discussed the matter with Principal Patterson and felt the problem was resolved and t losed. However, as I left the gymnasium following the basketball game between Mantl and Millard high schools, I was approached by a local fan and asked several times to write to your paper. The Incident occurred near the end of the game with Mantl leading by 12 points. The Mantl players had the game In hand, having out-playe- d and the out-score- d Millard players. Coach Neely was dlsputlnga call with the referee at the scorer's table. The referee walked away to confer with the second referee. Coach Neely continued to argue and followed the referee past the scorer's table almost to Millard's bench. At this point I said to Coach Neely, Come on Coach, sit down and let's play ball." Coach Neely turned to me and said, Shut up, you're nothing but a peon." I retorted. Come on Coach, sit down." 1 lis reply to me In part was, "Shut up. you big fat slob." Other words were also spoken by Coach Neely. Although our team was losing, I was enjoying the evening be This Week at the LDS Institute tv tv by Barry Baker Associate Director With a light snowfall to commence Snow Week" at Snow College last week, we Just knew It all had to be successful; and surely It was. As usual we experienced the always very popular LDs and Institute Choir concert on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The traditional Friday Forum speaker with a general authority of the Church on Friday at noon this year, however, was out general authority. Elder J. Richard Clarke, who spoke on November 4 th, the day prior to the Centennial celebration of the founding of Snow College on November 5, 1888. But we felt well rewarded this past Friday to hear from Pres. Earl Olsen of the Mantl Temple. President Olsen spoke on the importance of decision making, based upon the value of following the promptings of the Holy Spirit the value of understanding that our decisions have eternal conse- quences. On Friday night the annual Snow Ball was held In the cul- tural hall of our Institute Build- ing. The LDSSA again planned and decorated a beautiful hall, with grouped Christmas tree settings and even an Imitation fireplace and lounge furniture In several places throughout the dancing areas. The name of the band was 'Those Buys" from the Utah valley area. With beautifully patterned, hand made "snow- flakes" hanging from the celling throughout the dancing hall, and a few wall decorations to add to the feeling of this Christmas season, It was amazing how beautiful, yet Inexpensive the decorations were. However, the one Incident with your assistant coach left me with a bitter feeling toward Mantl High School. During the course of the evening I had not said anything to him, your players or even the referees. I have never met this man nor can think of why he would turn on me. I do get emotionally Involved In the games at times and do my share of yelling, but had said absolutely nothing that nlghL Throughout my playing days In high school and at Brigham Young University and having been an avid fan for years, I have never witnessed such poor sportsmanship by a coach. Tuejan Mission 2005 North 900 East Provo, Utah 84604 Elder Tyler Nielson Washington D.C. North sion 12520 Prosperity Drive Suite 330 amount of time, According to definition, a minute Is a precise one sixtieth of an hour. Thats theoretical. In actual practice, a minute is an extremely variable amount of time. For example: When I ask Beth how long before shell be can ready to go. If she says Just a minute you Old Goat," that to be anywhere from five (actual) minutes a half hour. When the long distance operator says, One minute please" she really means 15 seconds, but It could go longer. If Beth asks me to bring her something and Im watching TV, when I say "Just a minute" that means until the next commercial which generally isnt all that long. In the doctors office when the receptionist says, "It will be a few minutes," It never means less than 1 5 minutes and it could be an hour. However, if It goes over 30 minutes the receptionist usually come In and announces, 'The doctor will see you in just another minute." That means you reset your time to zero and start all over again. The time to really beware Is when someone says, IH be with you In a few minutes. In this case, a few actually means many. A few minutes has been known to extend half a day - but never under a quarter of an hour. Another vague expression Is a minute or two," as In When may I use the bathroom?" If you get the minute or two answer, youd better head for either the auxiliary bathroom or the neighbors. And what If a person Is honest enough to say, It will be five or ten minutes." That means they recognize that saying Just a minute" would be outright deceit, so they try to be honest and extend the time. So how long Is five or ten minutes?" Well that depends on what you're waiting for. If It's the bathroom scenario above, "five or ten minutes" Is altogether too long. But If you're waiting to see the dentist. It may be much too short to-wl- L -- I've noticed that no two people's Just a minute" are the same. That adds another variable. For example a mechanic's Just a minute", meaning how long it will take to fix your car. Is much longer than a bishop's "just a minute", meaning when he can see you. If minutes are variable when applied to waiting, it's even worse when applied to speaking. If someone Is assigned a talk, it Invariably winds up between seven and nine, and talk Is tantamount to giving assigning someone a them the whole sacrament meeting. When the bishop asks Please hold your testimonies to a few minutes to give more people a chance, that means the entire time will be taken by two people, with the second one going overtime enough that the bishop considers announcing the closing song while the speaker is still going. two-mlnu- te ten-minu- te And all this with people who claim to be afraid to speak In public." And if you think a second, or a moment Is shorter than a minute - no way. Theres actually no difference In how longyou have to wait when a person says "Just a second" (or even Just a sec") than when he says just a minute." And a moment Is Just the same as a second. Now If you can't understand all the above nonsense. Just take a moment to reflect on it and the meaning will become perfectly dear ... In Just a matter of time. Not so trivial: All of us have 24 hours a day, but some people shorten it up and some make it a lot longer. Elder Cory Gordon Australia, Melboum 1216 Old Burke Road Indiana. Indianapolis Miss. P.O.
