Show Page 7 Thursday, May 31, 1990 e, Messenger-Enterpris- Play for children is a valuable education tool BY MARY LOIS MADSEN Some of us think play is what you do when you get done with the important stuff. But for children, play IS the important stuff! Although it may be annoying to parents sometimes, children need to try things, touch things and fiddle with things to develop their understanding of the world, says Tom Lee, Extension Family Specialist in the Utah State University College of Family Life. From our logical perspective as adults, there may not seem to be logic to what is happening. But actually, children are engaging in that most cherished method of adult learning, science, when they play, he notes. Lee says children are actually performing experiments when they play. If I throw this ..., if I dump that .... If I taste that ... what will happen? They may not be experimenting in a logical order, but each little discovery is being tucked away and forming the basis of their understanding of the world. Children do not learn as well in the kind of environment that adults need, ruled by order, logic and structure. For example, Lee says first graders will have a harder time understanding math with a paper and pencil than they will with blocks they can count Even counting pictures of apples is not as easy for a child as counting actual apples. So how do we foster play? Lee says that unstructured learning is hard to do in large classrooms with one teacher. Many teachers use curriculum learning centers as part of their methods, which gives children the chance to explore at their own pace and in their own way. Lee suggests that parents be careful not to overprogram their childrens hours with too many structured activities. Relax your expectations, and try to give activities a clear purpose, and freedom to play, he ol recommends. even more importantly, parents can play with their children, in noncompetitive and loosely structured ways. In the process, parents may play, too, he adds. Perhaps, er of Gunnison Invites you to come lor sn Informal verse by verse Bible Study In the Book ol Revelations.
